Q: WiFi Issues With MacBook Air

I am about two weeks in to my new Macbook Air and love it except for the wifi. I have had five or six other Mac laptops in the past five years including the original air. I can confirm that there are some wifi issues with the Macbook Air. Based on the messages posted here and my experience here is where I am. I think if it is a "N" network it seems to work fine. I have never had an issue with my Airport Extreme at my house or my Dad's Linksys at his house which is also an N. This also I think resolves the "is it an ISP" issue, since they are distinctly different ISP's and these both work perfectly.

My problems are on non-N's it seems. I travel a lot so I hit a lot of guest networks which are almost always "g". These networks I can generally find and attach to them but not get a consistent internet connection. With these networks I have found that turning the airport on/off and refreshing the IP address does not work. Again I can connect to the browser, in most cases get what appears to be a valid IP but not gain any internet access. I have found that a power down and reboot AFTER attaching to the network (but not getting the internet connection) will then give me a steady and consistent connection.

I need to do some more testing and I guess traveling to pin down some of these things but I wanted to share what I have found thus far, but I definitely think there is a problem with the wifi on the new MacBook Air's.

Thanks,

I just purchased a 2012 MB AIR 13 inch and thus far- it's working fairly well  - however - it replaced a 5 month old imac from **** that had wifi issues and I could no longer deal with it... I have begun looking very seriously at switching back to the Windows platform - so APPLE - don't let this drive people away... It has - and will continue to do so... My loyalty and enthusiam for Apple has been diminished because of my imac wifi issues - and had my 2012 Air been the same I wouldn't be here writing this today. This is your last chance with me.

Well for all of you that just bought the Air 2012 and it works, you're lucky.

I can't even connect to my internet at home in my room its so terrible. Connection drops every minute or so, and if it does connect It literally takes me a full minute to connect to any page. Anyone have a link to dl mountain lion? I'm almost out of my return period.

    Thanks

If you're still in your return period, go exchange it now !

I just don't understand people that are just so addicted to Apple. I see no reason why you continue to hold on to a product that you cannot use comfortably after paying such an amount of money! First, call Apple and complain instead of just writing in this forum, then go see a Genius. Or you can just go return it while you still have the opportunity, or at least exchange it.

I'm not an ardent follower of Apple, but I do like beautiful gadgets that make my job easier at same time. The MBA does this meanwhile. I will readily forgo it as soon as it makes my work difficult.

You should not be having Wifi problem with this new 2012 MBA. Infact, mine connects at such an awesome speed just as when wired thru the Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter.

Obviously I SHOULDN'T have issues with it, but I do. I spent the whole first week complaining to Verizon that my new FIOS service was horrible, but after I simply compared with my brother's laptop and my phone in the same location, I found that it was the laptop.

For me this is my first apple product. I've always disliked apple products and was looking into an ultrabook. As the price was right comparing to other ultrabooks, I figured I'd see how the other half lives. I'll probably go in to see what they can do about it, but wanted to troubleshoot myself.

A 300 dollar dell 1525 inspiron shouldn't be outperforming this thing in any way haha.

I wouldn't even waste your time at the Genius bar, Apple stores are tricked out with multiple servers and wifi boosters so they likely won't find a problem. Just exchange it for another one

Agreed. Don't waste your time at the Genius Bar. The first thing they will tell you,

"I've never heard of this before."

And of corse it will work. And they won't let you demo ( as in waiting around until it drops) until it does happen.

When this first happended to me, I took it to a "Genius". And the guy in front of me had the same issues. I listened to their (the Genius and the guy) exchange. The guy left ******. My turn came up and of course the Genius denied they were talking about the same issue. And insisted he  never heard of my problem.

Don't waste your time. If you can exchange it, (or get your money back) fine. If not, you screwed. Unless you brought it a BestBuy (which is where I now buy all my Macs). Get the extended warranty.

I got a friend who had this arrangement. And a 2010 MBA (with this problem). After a year of suffering he threw it out his office window. Took the  pieces back to BestBuy and got a new one.

    Thanks for the responses guys.

I'm confused by how others have working 2012 Macbook Airs,

Wouldn't this mean it is not an OS issue>?

The wifi components don't differ from last generation to this one either.

    '

I guess I can be hopeful that this one is a lemon and all the other 2012's are good. I'll let you know if an exchange solves the problem.

I just purchased a 2012 macbook air.  On my old dell laptop, I get download speeds of 15 mbps.  On the new air, speedtest.net shows me speeds of less than 1 mbps.  I'm using a Linksys E900 (wireless N 300 mbps) -- I do not have the problem that others of spoken of regarding dropped wifi.  However, the speed is still unacceptably slow.  Has anyone found a solution to this problem?

Hi ther i had issues with this and posted my solution in august last year and have never had problem since. I wonder how many of you are in the USA. I am in UK and the incidence rate is really tiny over here. Is it a broadband and signal issue perhaps?  I just kicked out the keychain, deleted the connection and set up a new one on MBA then went into the router and set it to channel 12 and it just works. Our max speed at home is 7mbs and in our business premises in City is 15 mbs.  Another thing did you import your settings from a previous mac or did you start from scratch. Hope this may help. Cheers

My spouse has the same issue with her MBA 2011.  However, I found a solution that works for us all the time (though not ideal).

I found out that her MBA has probs on the 5n Ghz spectrum.  When I connect her to the 2.4n Ghz spectrum, her MBA connect fine and surfs quickly.  FYI, I use the most recent Time Capsule 2g (2011 or 4th gen).  Otherwise, all other devices that are capable of connecting the the 5Ghz spectrum, including my 2011 15" MBPro, connects find and without issue.

As most of you, I have also tried every solution without success.  I hope what I provided works for all, and especially hope that Mountain Lion fixes this permanently.

So I was forced to go to the Genius bar either way, and obviously they couldn't find what was wrong with wifi, BUT they found that my macbook air was shipped from factory with the wrong build. In addition, it had a faulty battery.

Don't know if I just have bad luck, but I got it replaced and I'm hoping as others have mentioned that Mountain Lion will solve the problem. I'm going to install tonight.

Has it been established that Moutain Lion will actually solve this issue? Or the flip-side question: has anyone out there installed Mountain Lion and NOT solved the problem?

In my case, our two MBAs connect reliably to our Motorola Netopia wireless router. But neigher MBA can get on-line if we are in a part of the house serviced by the Amped repeater, although the iPhones and iPads connect through the repeater.

My problem: MBA with bluetooth enabled when going to sleep had troubles reconnecting to wifi when waking up.

I've tried to fix this several times during the year I've owned this machine but none of the proposed solutions worked for me. Several of them actually spawned new problems.

My solution: I used the daemon SleepWatcher to disable bluetooth before sleep, and then enable it again 3 seconds after wakeup. Now wifi connects within a few seconds, and a second later my magic mouse starts working.

There's many possible ways to make SleepWatcher disable/enable bluetooth on sleep/wakeup. I call a couple of AppleScripts based on this script. The script toggles bluetooth, I split it into two scripts to turn bluetooth on or off instead of toggle. And it's even got flashy growl notifications!
