I had a similar problem to everyone else and after digging around I found that Internet Sharing was turned on (by default?).  Turning it off solved all of my wifi problems for now.

Like everyone else here, I'm also having wifi issues. My macbook air is 2 months old and from the very start has always lost connection pretty often. Up until last week it would always get right back on after a minute or so.

Now, it will not work at all on the network at my university, which is also my place of employment. It works everwhere else that I have tried. Nobody else (at least 20 people) that I have asked have had a single problem getting on the network at the university including some with macbooks.

I have called several times about this and each time have been told that it is most likely a problem with the network, not with the computer? How can this be? They sent me a proram that is susposed to help them see what is going on when I am unable to get on the computer.

This is so frustrating. If I can't get on at the University my computer is pretty much worthless. Since it is so new, what do you think my chances of apple replacing parts until this problem is solved is? If they will not, how much would it be to repalce all of the wifi hardware?

Any suggestions? The other thing is I'm about to lose my free apple care so I am faced with spending a bunch of money to extend it.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My problems have completely disappeered. I'm not sure it it was an update to saftware, or changing out routers/cable companies.

But seeing all these complaints and mine hase vanished.

I no longer use ATT Uverse as is was an very bad experience with internet.

Slight problems with Time Warner at first, but the put in their "premium" router and no problems since.

BTW, we have 3 MBA's in our house without issues.

    I hope that helps

My MBA 2011 has just started dropping the WiFi connection at home over the weekend. Network diagnostics says that the ISP, Internet and Server are failing. They drop out for a couple of seconds or for long periods.

No apparent cause. Recently added Microsoft Office to system via DVD sharing, but don't see why that should be an issue three weeks after doing it. Looks like hardware trouble.

Hello Apple. Anyone listening? We need a solution to this and fast.

I too have MBA with wifi problems.  Works fine at law school, crap at home.  I've reconfigured the wireless router to WPA2 but can't connect unless I first log in to my dads ASUS Ultrabook.  Then, my MBA finds and connects to the network.  The wireless feature of the MBA seems very weak.

I'm considering a USB wireless adapter for the MBA.  Any suggestions?

I would return your MBA if you are considering a wireless adapter. I have a 2011 model and the Wifi signal seems to be pretty weak. I am considering selling mine now.

I just took my MBA out of the box yesterday. I had a toshiba laptop that worked fine but figured I'd upgrade and give the Toshiba to my 15 year old son. I haven't been able to get connect to my my wirelss account even though my network shows up. The error message tells me that another device has the same IP address and that I can either change my IP address on my MBA or on the other device. Really? I spent less that a $1000 for my MBA but could've bought a cheap "Acer", put the remaininig $600 in my pocket, and been able to connect to the my wirelsss network and the internet the minute I turned the computer on. We have 3-Iphones, 1-Ipad and 1-mac that all connect without issue and I haven't had to change the IP Address on any of those devices, so why the issues with the MBA. Judging from the many pages of complaints it doesn't seem like a clear solution is in the works. I purchased mine on a military base and I purchased their protection plan. So I might just return mine for another brand and suggest that they pull the MBA from their shelves.

I did the exact same thing.  Took it out of the box.  Wifi worked for about an hour then stopped working.  I was able to get it to work just long enough to update to 10.8.2 and it still doesn't work.  I've tried numerous things to get it to work but nothing has.  We've had up to 10 devices all connected to the network without issue (iphones, ipads, windows pcs).  I haven't tried another network yet but I am at a loss.  I have an appointment to bring it in on monday.  Hopefully, it's just this network that's causing the issues and I can deal with it by using my phone as a hotspot.

I have 2 home networks - 1 dsl/airport, 1 cable/dlink - same issue on both, same issue at Starbucks, same issue at recent Marriott stay

I had this problem with my MacAir. It has no trouble finding the router with a strong signal. But launching Safari would just stall on a blank page no matter what website I try. My iPhone, iPad, and iMac have not trouble connecting to any webpage using the same router. Then I accidentally discovered that by unchecking the Auto Proxy Discovery option solved the connection issue.

System Preferences -> Network -> WiFi -> Advanced -> Auto Proxy Discovery

Hey there, I was facing the same problem for ages too. Super frustrating till I came across's forum discussion on the same problem. A user called SKY recommended changing the router channel to 10. I did and it immediately fixed the problem! Check it out ...

That's fine and dandy. But you can't change the network in so many various situations.... Work / hotels, etc

hi, besides the fact that i have essentially all the problems that have been mentioned on this post (macbook air mid 2011 dropping wifi connection under os x 10.8.2 and no luck with any of the solutions and/or workarounds that have been presented here), i can add another observation that really makes me want to bin all apple products i ever purchased: essentially i get the same wifi drops if i use my brand new iphone 5 as a personal hotspot, i.e., it works fine for a few minutes but every now and then (at least once every 30 min) the internet connection breaks down (with the phone itself enjoying a perfectly valid 3g connection, that is, i can keep on surfing the web on the phone but no more data coming through to the macbook air). like so many other have described before, the only fix is to switch wifi on and off on the macbook air and re-connect. it's a complete farce, this is two pretty recent apple products not working smoothly together under the most standard usage scenario...

as a follow up to my previous post, i have given up on os x software (from the first version of lion up until 10.8.2) and have installed a retail windows 7 pro version on my macbook air. it now works like a charm, no more wifi connection drops at all although (the now at least reliable) air wifi connection is poor in comparison to what i get out of my sony vaio z series: gives me around 20mbps on the air and 40mbps on the z (and, yes, this is the average over various runs, iterating between the two).

last night i was even able to use my iphone as a personal hotspot and it worked for hours, without a single drop (as one would expect with the phone lying right next to the air) whereas under 10.8.2 i would have to switch wifi on and off every 20 minutes so as to establish a fresh connection between a mid 2011 air and a brand new iphone 5 (and, yes, i am referring to factory condition devices, straight out of the box with their respective fresh os installs)...

i really don't get why apple can't get their act together.

I posted a while ago that it was an Apple software issue. I had upgraded my 2011 MBA to Lion and had all the problems discussed in this thread. I re installed Snow Leopard and it works a dream in ANY location, at home, or away. The previous comment backs this up. APPLE you have a flaw in the Lion onwards software!!
