Unable to authenticate users with OS X Server 10.6.5

DOES ANYONE OUT THERE REALLY HAVE A SOLUTION TO THIS ISSUE ?

Do I need to resort calling Microsoft for this one ? - it seems that LDAP doesn't authenticate any user (regardless of user type), or not. At times it works, but others it doesn't. The problem lies from the Server's side (moreover 10.6.5) as when you bind an end user workstation to the domain, it works, however the actual authentication fails from the server end. I receive a message stating that "Unable to log in to the server with user name "username" at this time. An error has occurred" - then I'm left with searching blogs and looking for something that Apple should have an answer for immediately; I spoke to Apple support team and they suggested re-installation of the OS for the particular workstation(s) that I was having problems with (which was insanely stupid) to begin with. I perform the OS reinstall for just one desktop and that didn't fix the problem either.

If I can'y get this fixed within a reasonable timeframe, I'm returning this server product and going back to Microsoft just out of frustration. It is amazing that Apple would put out something as buggy as this, since without OD/LDAP, you don't have a working server product, period.

Any help is really appreciated..... also, how can I roll back to 10.6.4 (if that version will allow me to authenticate) ?

Hi Gordon,

You are a true champ.... I was able to follow and get it to work... thank you so so so so much, I have been trying to get this to work for the past 4 days and was almost crying out 🙂 ..

ok to point out what I was doing wrong was... I test the DNS - all ok
then I did the Home folder test as well kerb ticket test .... all passed ok ...
then tried to connect to the server (command + K ) and it didn't work ... so I was wondering what I did wrong.. then it hit me ... even I setup all the home directories correct , I did not start the AFP service (What a fool am I ??? )

started it ..and all worked like a charm ...

Thank you so much once again Gordon... its really nice to know there are so much nice ppl to help us.

OK - this was solved, thanks to Apple Support - GREAT JOB, I MIGHT ADD!

It was a pure and simple DNS issue. As a matter of fact, 9/10 times, it will be a DNS issue. I found this out the hard way. DNS is so important, that it is often quickly overlooked. Again, Setup DNS correctly and 99% of all issues are trivial after that.

Thanks again all for your help .....
