How Do I keep my external Monitor on when I close my MBP laptop cover?

I purchased an external monitor and hooked it up. However, when I close the cover of my laptop, the monitor goes black. I tried the Display settings under preferences and there doesn't appear to be any configuration options.
Hopefully someone can help me with this. Hope all had a great thanksgiving holiday.

First you need an external keyboard and mouse. Here are the rules for clamshell mode:

Dear Captain Fred,
I do have those items and plugged them in. I also made sure that the laptop is connected to power.
The Monitor clearly mirrors what is on my laptop screen but as soon as I shut it, the monitor goes blank and the message "no signal" shows up. I move the mouse AND I click the keyboard and it does not wake up. I do have a Macbook Pro so I can't figure out why it won't go into the clamshell mode.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
