Quicktime reference movie reference change

Is there a way (scriptable or manual for example) to change the file paths names stored in a quicktime movie reference file?

Let me explain. I use iTunes to manage several hundred windows media files by using quicktime movie reference files for each wmv files. In each reference mov file is a full path to the source. The reference files were created by a script that used the Quicktime 7 "save as reference" feature. The drawback to this approach appears when there's a need to move the source files. I can re-run the script that created the reference files, but this will take many hours since in Quicktime 7 the entire large video source file has to load before the "save as reference" can execute.

Any suggestions or hints? Thanks.
