Unable to Sync or upgrade (running 3.1.3).. says OS 4.2 download is corrupt

Syncing takes a long time and fails with error 0x8004002 (unknown error occured).
Then it says the app on the device is corrupted and cannot be synced.

One of the solutions listed is to upgrade. Cant do that either.
It says 12 minutes to download OS 4.2 and at the end of it I see a message, the download was corrupted and to try again. Since i have tried multiple times with the same message, I believe that cannot be happening and the cause is something else.
Anyone has any other ideas?
Is there a way to run "chkdsk" on the iphone disk and mark sectors as bad or something?

DELL, Windows Vista, iPod Touch, iphone 3GS both running 3.1.3, Intunes 10.1 on Vista

The corruption is not on the iPhone, it would be the file that has been downloaded. Your signature says you are running Windows, make sure that you disable the firewall and and security software that you have running before you attempt to download the update. The sync error you list has an Apple support document [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3221]. See if that helps you.

Hey thanks for the response.
I checked out the support notes before. Tried out a bunch of things including rebooting etc. Didnt work. Even Stopped by AV software before kicking off the download.
It is weird that since I upgraded the iTunes to 10.1, it takes a long time to backup stuff now! Since my data has not changed, wonder why. Right now, its stuck on transfering purchases for 30 mins.
I am going to kill the process and reboot and try again.

Actually, since the iOS4x updates, backups run a heck of a lot faster, although mine have never really been a problem. Make sure when you click the update button on iTunes, that you select download only. This give the software a chance to download and doesn't affect the iPhone. That way if there is an error, it won't affect the phone to start with either. I've always done my updates that way and have yet to encounter an issue.
The only thing I can think of right now if you have performed a reset on the phone is to wait a little while to let the backup complete. There may be a corrupt file on there that it needs to get past before it can complete and then you can fix that with the restore.
