Score Editor- Create Multi-Bar Repeat

I'm transcribing pop songs with a lot of 8 bar repeats. How can I insert a multiple bar repeat symbol into my score? I only see the 1 and 2 bar repeat symbols and I can't even really get those to work for me either.

MB Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.5), Logic 9

Thanks for posting that example, Guy. "Multi-bar repeat" symbols (in this case, 2 bars repeats) are available in the part box. Have been forever.

Referring back to my original reply, a repeat sign such as you used in your chart can't accommodate more than 2 measures. And that's why I mentioned the ending symbols. If there's an 8 bar section (per the OP's post) that needs to be repeated, you'd normally use repeat signs at the appropriate bar lines in conjunction with endings to indicate how many times the section is to be repeated. Or, of course, you could simply have repeat signs at the bars with text showing how many times the sections are to be repeated (e.g., "4x") with or without the addition of D.S. or coda markings to indicate the next section, etc.

Indeed - this is something I have really missed in the Logic Score editor for basic arrangements of pop/jazz etc

It is very common to have a multi bar repeat which is not just 1 or 2 bars - 4 bar & 8 would be especially useful in many situations where there is a groove going and you just need a drummer or bass player to keep a chord progression or riff that is obvious.

It would enable one to reduce the number of pages for the part

PS Just to add - notwithstanding Ski's helpful input - that what is need is the capacity to do fill in an actually number above the bars where the two bar repeat is. This very common convention of arrangers is just not available in Logic - and it should be.

If you take Guy's example above, it would mean you could condense the part and not have loads and loads of repeated 2 bar segments. And also ...

.. you would not want to add extra repeat signs etc because you would want the other instrument parts ( ie with more complicated content melody lines perhaps) to be longer - and have the same repeat signs on each part.

In other words, the rhythm section is playing a groove which repeats and the soloist or other instruments are doing other stuff on top of it.

It is in rhythm section parts that I really miss the capacity to add numbers above the repeated two bar sign

Hope this makes sense

Just to illustrate what I am trying to say:

Below is a piano groove which goes on for ages. The main Screenshot shows bars 7 8 9 10 cleared for a 4 bar repeat. Ideally you would want to do this in blocks of 4 bars so the musician can follow easily - and yet space wise you would then take up only 2 bars of your part to represent this. Or even 2 bars of your part to represent and a repeat of 8 bars.

Now with pen and paper arranging it would be possible to put the convention of two diagonal thick stripes with dots and the number 4 above written exactly where the bar 9 barline is.

Instead in Logic's inadequate system, if you drag that symbol to bar 9 barline.. you get the little inset below which is that Logic 'thinks' you are repeating bars 7 and 8

PS and you would also want a way to easily hide the 4 bar rest signs - ideally without going to set up a completely different Staff Style which hides rests...

Indeed (#1). And indeed (#2) it points out a shortcoming in Logic's score editor that I've never quite grokked until now. Repeat signs at barlines are global and will appear in all parts, regardless of whether they repeat in the same way or even not at all.

I guess there are no easy workarounds for any of this. The multi-bar repeats that you guys want don't exist, and the only way to get barline-repeats to work for multiple parts with different barline-repeat requirements is to save separate projects -- perhaps as many as one per part -- with the barline-repeats indicated as needed.
