Q: iTunes store account hacked

I'm posting this just to share my story and get reactions. It's a little detailed but I thought worth sharing.

On November 23, 2010 I purchased a single song from the iTunes store for .99. I used store credit that I had from a gift card I received last year. It was the first purchase I had made since July 2010.

On November 25, 2010 I received a receipt for 2 more separate orders to my account. These were for over $50 in iPhones apps. Here's a sampling of some of the purchases:

1 eREAD isoshu, v1.5, Seller: ChengDu YueTong Internet Information Co. Ltd (17+)
2 Plants vs. Zombies, v1.3, Seller: PopCap Games, Inc. (iDP)
3 Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge, v1.1, Seller: Lucasfilm International Services Inc.
4 Asphalt 5, v1.2.6, Seller: Gameloft (9+)
5 Let's Golf!® 2, v1.0.1, Seller: Gameloft (4+)
6 Frames & FX for Photos, v2.5.1, Seller: Imikimi, LLC (12+)
7 Stenches: A Zombie Tale of Trenches, v1.0.1, Seller: Thunder Game Works (9+)

I do not have a credit card linked to my account, so these were made using my store credit.

I have only 1 computer authorized for my account (my personal home computer). I live alone and no one else touches my Powerbook but me. I also DO NOT own an iPhone, so I would have no interest in apps.

After I saw these bizarre purchases, I checked my account. I noticed 2 strange things: My account information had changed: My street address was correct, but city, state and zip had changed to: Towson, MD 21286-7840. I have never lived in Maryland. Also, I noticed that my password recovery answer had changed to "Murray" in response to a question about my mother's maiden name. That's decidedly NOT my mother's maiden name. Also, my birthdate had changed to an incorrect month and day.

I immediately changed my password and my recovery question/answer challenge.

I reported problems on all of these purchases and also contacted iTunes Account Support by e-mail.

Within 24 hours I received an e-mail from "Vicki" at iTunes Customer Support. She wrote:

"When reviewing over your account "name@domain.net" and the two reported orders, it shows that the content purchased within them was acquired from the computer that is currently authorized for your iTunes account. So I strongly advise that you do consult with those in your household regarding the purchases made, and the charges that resulted from those purchases."

Further:

"I have gone and reversed the charges for the two orders....You will see a store credit in three to five business days....Please note that this is a one-time exception, as the iTunes Store Terms and Conditions state that all sales are final."

I am pleased that Apple is refunding my store credit and replied so quickly.

However, it is simply impossible that these purchases were made from my computer. Again, my Powerbook is the only computer I have ever authorized to access my account, and I am the only person with access to it.

I am not sure how this happened. Any thoughts or similar experiences?

    Gang.....

So I don't know if I'm just lucky or what.

I too got the "auto-downloaded" KingdomConquest app that I've never heard of, but all it seemed to do is download.

There do not seem to be any in-app purchases, and my balance is still intact.

Lucky?, or does it take a while to get hit?

    Cheers!

Carlo, have you been reading this thread, or do you just keep popping in to troll people?

My PC has not been hacked, nor am I a victim of phishing. Knowing that, how do you explain what has happened?

I actually think Carlo works for Apple .. they are the "$%@  that keep insisting that this is all phishing scams !!

I just went through this exact same problem as sub187 and a similar purchase of an in-app purchase of an app I don't even have. Good to know that Apple isn't as bullet proof as Apple'ites' would have you believe. sub187: I followed the email's instructions and changed my password. Then I contacted customer support under Itunes-account-billing, after multiple emails and no 'support', other than a 1 time only refund I'm resigned to emptying out my account and only making purchases with a prepaid credit card which I do everywhere else on the internet.

It's not gift cards. A lot of us have been hacked and it didn't involve gift cards.

The hacking appears to be occuring on Apple's own servers.

Why is that only my Apple iTunes account got hacked? Not my Amazon account, not my XBOX Live account, only Apple?

There is overwhelming evidence that these hacks are occuring on Apple's server side and the program being used is sold in China and is called 'Apple Hack'.

Woke up yesterday morning to this email from Apple:

Your Apple ID, xxx, was just used to make a purchase in Galaxy Empire from the App Store on a computer or device that had not previously been associated with that Apple ID.  If you made this purchase, you can disregard this email. It was only sent to alert you in case you did not make the purchase yourself.  If you did not make this purchase, we recommend that you go to iforgot.apple.com to change your password, then see Apple ID: Tips for protecting the security of your account for further assistance.  Regards, Apple

Oh...and 16 cents remaining on my gift card balance.  I submitted feedback, reported the purchases as problems within iTunes and submitted an Express Lane case, but no response from Apple, I guess due to its being the weekend.  I also changed by AppleID and password.

"Nice" to know this is an ongoing issue.  If you can call theft nice.

Well I've had an account since 2008 & not once have I had a problem until I added this gift card. And according to most of the post including mine, The downloads are only in the amount of credit we have on our accounts. I'm not saying that everyone is being hacked because of gift cards but if you read the last few post almost everyone has mentioned a gift card. Like I said the gift card is just my theory based on what people are saying.

I have had no problems with my Apple ID since 2004. Then this morning I got an email saying my Apple ID was used to download some Chinese app on an unrecognized device (why do they allow that?) I checked my purchase history through the computer, and turns out whoever downloaded the free Chinese app made in-app purchases of $49.99, $9.99, and $0.99. I used to have store credit from a gift card of $60-something; now I have $3. I also noticed the CC on file was deleted, but not used.

I changed my password and contacted Apple through express lane, no reply yet. Now that I see so many similar cases on this forum, I've got to think it's a problem on Apple's end. The email was probably the most frustrating part. They know it was a purchase made on an unauthorized device... so why allow it? And why only "notify" me without any option in the email to report it, instead of only links to change my password and safety tips? :( very disappointed and frustrated

    Now to the topic

I have already posted what is happening a few times now.

I have forwarded the program to a few news papers and tv

    Networks. No replays yet.

The removing of your cc is due to the request of the

Pin code on the back of your card.

The reason for the addy change is to due with other

Issues such a contact iTunes support message they get

    When using a new device.

Stay tuned for my YouTube video showing how this is

    Done.

Modes, remove my post all you want. I'll spam it again and use

Other accounts to post it. I won't be kept quite any longer.

I'll be sure to mention that in the YouTube video as well

I just got hacked today.  $47.60 for Kingdom Conquest.  I too had just added some gift cards to my account so I wonder what's up there!  It was not that easy to get to Apple on this, as "Report a problem" did not seem to be working as it is supposed to work. I managed to get my complaint and request into customer support and I recieved an acknowledgment.  Here is hoping for a prompt refund and for an explanation.  It is worrying to me that this seems to have been going on for some time now.  Apple?? What up???

Im here to join the party.  I got hacked in the middle of the night.  They emptied my gift card then they sucked money out of my paypal that is linked to my checking account.  Apple support has so far been useless.  I've gotten nowhere.  Paypal seems to be doing something since they stoped payment on the other stuff they started charging me.  I do not know if I will get my money back and apple doesnt even have a number for me to call.  This is a joke and a scam.  Apple tells me an unauthorized device made a purchase but they dont stop it?  ***?  Now my account is locked and it says I owe them money for purchases that werent paid lol.  One of the games is even in chineese.  Apple is hiding this and I wouldnt be surprised if this post gets deleted.  They obviously have a problem and insted of fixing it they ignore it.  Peoples money and accounts are vunerable.

I got hacked last night as well. They bought a "神仙道HD" game with $70 in in-app purchases. Went from over $70 to $1.11. Thing is this gift card balance has been here a while, it's the $100 I got from the apple promotion last summer. Super bummed, I e-mailed apple so we'll see. The fact that some of you guys got refunds gives me hope. I really feel sorry for you guys that had paypal accounts attacked as well.

    So update to my post:

I got a response from Apple last night, and they refunded my account for all the in-app purchases in that chinese game. However, they also disabled my account, so no further purchases can be made. I guess that gives me time to figure out what I should immediately spend all the credit on (so this doesnt happen again) when I re-enable it :)

FYI I emailed Apple through Express Lane, under the billing and purchases category. I included the order number as well as all the individual purchase amounts. (I wasn't able to copy paste the Chinese characters, but it turned out all right) good luck you guys!
