Q: iTunes store account hacked

I'm posting this just to share my story and get reactions. It's a little detailed but I thought worth sharing.

On November 23, 2010 I purchased a single song from the iTunes store for .99. I used store credit that I had from a gift card I received last year. It was the first purchase I had made since July 2010.

On November 25, 2010 I received a receipt for 2 more separate orders to my account. These were for over $50 in iPhones apps. Here's a sampling of some of the purchases:

1 eREAD isoshu, v1.5, Seller: ChengDu YueTong Internet Information Co. Ltd (17+)
2 Plants vs. Zombies, v1.3, Seller: PopCap Games, Inc. (iDP)
3 Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge, v1.1, Seller: Lucasfilm International Services Inc.
4 Asphalt 5, v1.2.6, Seller: Gameloft (9+)
5 Let's Golf!® 2, v1.0.1, Seller: Gameloft (4+)
6 Frames & FX for Photos, v2.5.1, Seller: Imikimi, LLC (12+)
7 Stenches: A Zombie Tale of Trenches, v1.0.1, Seller: Thunder Game Works (9+)

I do not have a credit card linked to my account, so these were made using my store credit.

I have only 1 computer authorized for my account (my personal home computer). I live alone and no one else touches my Powerbook but me. I also DO NOT own an iPhone, so I would have no interest in apps.

After I saw these bizarre purchases, I checked my account. I noticed 2 strange things: My account information had changed: My street address was correct, but city, state and zip had changed to: Towson, MD 21286-7840. I have never lived in Maryland. Also, I noticed that my password recovery answer had changed to "Murray" in response to a question about my mother's maiden name. That's decidedly NOT my mother's maiden name. Also, my birthdate had changed to an incorrect month and day.

I immediately changed my password and my recovery question/answer challenge.

I reported problems on all of these purchases and also contacted iTunes Account Support by e-mail.

Within 24 hours I received an e-mail from "Vicki" at iTunes Customer Support. She wrote:

"When reviewing over your account "name@domain.net" and the two reported orders, it shows that the content purchased within them was acquired from the computer that is currently authorized for your iTunes account. So I strongly advise that you do consult with those in your household regarding the purchases made, and the charges that resulted from those purchases."

Further:

"I have gone and reversed the charges for the two orders....You will see a store credit in three to five business days....Please note that this is a one-time exception, as the iTunes Store Terms and Conditions state that all sales are final."

I am pleased that Apple is refunding my store credit and replied so quickly.

However, it is simply impossible that these purchases were made from my computer. Again, my Powerbook is the only computer I have ever authorized to access my account, and I am the only person with access to it.

I am not sure how this happened. Any thoughts or similar experiences?

Hmmm, today about $6 went mysteriously missing from my account.  I just noticed it when I logged into iTunes, my store credit is a bit less than it was even an hour ago.  But my purchase history shows my most recent purchase was 5/24.  What the frickles?

I already changed my password, maybe something will show up in my purchase history if there's a delay.  My credit card info and billing address haven't been modified.

The very same thing happened to me today.  I received two receipts that I purchased gift certificates for cf and gcg.  Each also $20.  I noticed that my zip code was changed into some random numbers I do not recognize.  I've emailed Apple support, changed my password, and deauthorized all computers for now.  I hope Apple explains how this happened.

Yes, I noticed that after doing a sync with my iPhone that there were a whole bunch of apps that I didn't recognize on my phone. There were a bunch of games and I don't play ANY games & just a bunch of stuff I would never download because they weren't even close to my interests!! They were done on 2 seperate days but luckily they were free apps! I did get a message around that time that said I purchased some things that I had NO CLUE what it was or even meant!! I have had my iTunes account hacked last year also & lost my entire library & files on my Macbook!! I'm SICK OF IT!!!

I would suggest you better take care of your stuff instead of complaining to apple.

Have you contacted Apple concerning your account? Here is a link to Apple's contact page where you can find a way to contact Apple for pretty much any issue:

    http://www.apple.com/contact/

This is where I would start.

    I hope this helps.

Agreed! Back your stuff up....also, if there are apps on your phone you never downloaded, maybe a friend did. Put a pass code on your phone and take responsibility.

If your history doesn't show anything odd then your balance probably refreshed when you signed in to show the accurate balance.

This morning my wife called me to ask what I had spent at apple for $2,411.58

Looks like someone hacked my apple account and made two seperate transactions, both over 1k each.

My Apple account does not show any recent purchases, but the disc. from my bank is that this was thru the apple store app. Just great - they make me download this stupid app to check out at their store, and now it's been used to take a bunch of money out of my account.. . . just lovely.

The funny thing is that I have not recieved a reciept from them for the purchse, and none of my personal info has changed on my account.

I've gone thru the process of emailing them thru the website. . . I really wish that there was a real person that could look up my account with me on the phone and get to the bottom of this, so that I can provide info to the cops.

Sounds very very fabricated. You better call your credit card company instead of posting here.

Dang - Wish I'd thought of that. . . So what should I say to these credit card people that you speak of?

I mean -obviousley - the first thing I did in this case -when I saw that someone had fraudantly used my credit card thru the apple store app was to post on the apple forum in hopes that some wise @ss would bestow upon me his magnificent wisdom on what I should be doing - INSTEAD of looking for some guidance on how to get thru to Apple.

    I bow to your level 2 wisdom kind sir. . . .

    That was sarcasm. . .

They were obviousley contacted immedialty. . .

I'm looking for help on how to get thru to apple. . . not on how to handle credit card fraud.

But I do appreciate the help. - Even if it sounds "very very fabricated"

You should follow the terms of your service agreement with your financial instituion. You should call your credit card company back up, and follow their instructions.

If there was some way to report this post I would.

And not just for the grammar.
