Q: iTunes store account hacked

I'm posting this just to share my story and get reactions. It's a little detailed but I thought worth sharing.

On November 23, 2010 I purchased a single song from the iTunes store for .99. I used store credit that I had from a gift card I received last year. It was the first purchase I had made since July 2010.

On November 25, 2010 I received a receipt for 2 more separate orders to my account. These were for over $50 in iPhones apps. Here's a sampling of some of the purchases:

1 eREAD isoshu, v1.5, Seller: ChengDu YueTong Internet Information Co. Ltd (17+)
2 Plants vs. Zombies, v1.3, Seller: PopCap Games, Inc. (iDP)
3 Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge, v1.1, Seller: Lucasfilm International Services Inc.
4 Asphalt 5, v1.2.6, Seller: Gameloft (9+)
5 Let's Golf!® 2, v1.0.1, Seller: Gameloft (4+)
6 Frames & FX for Photos, v2.5.1, Seller: Imikimi, LLC (12+)
7 Stenches: A Zombie Tale of Trenches, v1.0.1, Seller: Thunder Game Works (9+)

I do not have a credit card linked to my account, so these were made using my store credit.

I have only 1 computer authorized for my account (my personal home computer). I live alone and no one else touches my Powerbook but me. I also DO NOT own an iPhone, so I would have no interest in apps.

After I saw these bizarre purchases, I checked my account. I noticed 2 strange things: My account information had changed: My street address was correct, but city, state and zip had changed to: Towson, MD 21286-7840. I have never lived in Maryland. Also, I noticed that my password recovery answer had changed to "Murray" in response to a question about my mother's maiden name. That's decidedly NOT my mother's maiden name. Also, my birthdate had changed to an incorrect month and day.

I immediately changed my password and my recovery question/answer challenge.

I reported problems on all of these purchases and also contacted iTunes Account Support by e-mail.

Within 24 hours I received an e-mail from "Vicki" at iTunes Customer Support. She wrote:

"When reviewing over your account "name@domain.net" and the two reported orders, it shows that the content purchased within them was acquired from the computer that is currently authorized for your iTunes account. So I strongly advise that you do consult with those in your household regarding the purchases made, and the charges that resulted from those purchases."

Further:

"I have gone and reversed the charges for the two orders....You will see a store credit in three to five business days....Please note that this is a one-time exception, as the iTunes Store Terms and Conditions state that all sales are final."

I am pleased that Apple is refunding my store credit and replied so quickly.

However, it is simply impossible that these purchases were made from my computer. Again, my Powerbook is the only computer I have ever authorized to access my account, and I am the only person with access to it.

I am not sure how this happened. Any thoughts or similar experiences?

I also got a debit of EUR 79.99. BUT I haven't bought anything in last months. Hope to get an answer very quickly from Apple. I'm totally fed up with security and Internet.

But do you think Apple will handle this in a smooth way ?

So, what is the cause of this?  I have read on the internet that it may be a few apps we download from the app store.  One mentioned was texas poker, which i did download onto my macbook.  I really haven't put too many other apps on my macbook yet as it's only a few weeks old.  Who else had this app on their mac?

Same happenned me last week. Two purchases of Texas Poker chips of 7.99 each were made (I had E25 credit sitting on the account), credit card details changed also. I emailed Apple 6 days ago and havent heard anything back although the credit that was stolen seems to have been refunded to my account. Thanks for an email to say sorry and we've sorted it-since the problem seems to be woth itunes or specifically itunes gift cards. Why the **** is this game still allowed on the app store? Other apps have been taken down in the past for far less. I understand that it may not be the developer's fault but tighter security is needed. We pay over the odds for Apple products and in the last few years they've become one of the most profitable brands on the planet yet their customer service is DISGRACEFUL! I'd get treated better by the grumpy old man behind the counter of my local newsagents!

As a bit of diagnostic information, the only Apple product I have and use is my wife's iPhone 3GS.  The only apps she buys and/or downloads (in addition to the most popular mainstream ones) are medical apps. I posted here because this thread was the most relevant result in a Google search.

Of note, the "more like this" on the right sidebar of this page has gotten much more "unauthorized download" related in the last couple days.

This just happened to me, too. Somebody got into my itunes account, changed my password, downloaded this app, and then made a 19.99 in app purchase. I contacted Paypal and they immediately said that they would refund my money, but so far Apple hasn't written me back yet. Apple's mechanism for reporting this type of activity is completely underwhelming.

Add me to the list of hacked accounts...we have bought many apple products in the past few years, and currently have 2 iPhones, a MBP and an Apple TV. I too had around 20 bucks on a gift card, just to have it stolen from me by someone lining the pockets of Lakoo (whatever the heck that is...). I found my credit card information missing completely, my address changed (although I'm not sure what changed because it is the same as it was, so they must have changed it and changed it back or something...) and then got notification of the change. Luckily that's all they charged, so I cancelled all my info and will be putting in a dispute to Apple and Lakoo as well as changing all my passwords....serious lack of trust going on right now, won't be loading gift cards for awhile with all the crap going on...

Thursday morning, someone STOLE $400 from our Itunes account.  If someone did this to me on the street, I could call a tax supported police station filled with underpaid cops and they would come and arrest the THIEF.  But Apple, the all mighty and powerful, doesn't have enough money to post a phone number for victims to call???  Apple...you are not the only company on this planet anymore.  You have competition and my business is going elsewhere.

Someone hacked into my account on Friday, Aug 13 and ordered the Order & Chaos app and some other associated apps.  Luckily the total was around $30.00 and I had a credit on my account from gift cards so this did not affect my Paypal account.  I did recieve an e-mail from Apple saying that someone had made charges to my account from a different computer than the one registered with iTunes.  I am waiting to hear fom Apple about crediting my account.  I changed my password and all my personal information is intact.  It sounds like this is a major security break.

The good news, it only took 3 days of emails to get my $98 refunded and my account unlocked.  I will give Apple credit here, they are taking care of the victims pretty quickly.  On the other hand, I get the feeling they are quickly "paying us off" to enable them to continue to hide this issue completely.  It appears this is slowly hitting bigger media outlets.. can't wait till it hits a national news source.  It appears that the mighty Apple has been hacked and doesn't want its customers to know.  My MBP is only a few weeks old (this is my first Mac) and it has even made me consider the new iphone when Verizon releases it later this year.  ( I currently have a Droid).  This issue is definately making me think twice about getting an iPhone.. time will tell.  It's time for Apple to "man up" and stop hiding reality.  In the emails I sent back to Apple trying to resolve this matter, I kept (nicely) asking what is causing this and asking what I can do to prevent it from happening again.  The customer service reps NEVER answered this question on any email and did a great job ignoring the question.  Come on Apple, you're better than this!

I was wondering if anyone is having a similar experience. It appears that my information is getting placed on ITunes accounts that are hacked and then I am getting phone calls from restricted numbers saying that I hacked their ITunes account and made unauthorized purchases. I put an e-mail into apple but I have yet to hear anything back from them. Does anyone have any ideas or similar experiance's.

The same thing happened to me a couple of days ago.  They bought this game with Chinese lettering. They changed the city, state, and zip code on my shipping address and everything else was the same. I changed my password ASAP after Apple send me an e-mail.  So far I haven't seen anything else show up on my e-mail telling me other wise. Thank God I didn't have my credit card information stored on it and I never will!

Same thing happened to me on 8/11.  Purchased a free Chinese app, and used $65 worth of in app purchases using all of the gift card amount in my account.  I have a strong feeling APPLE will say sorry about your luck, have a nice day.  In which my response is good bye apple, hello android.  Looks like it will be a switch back to a PC, and android tablets.  For $65, they will loose an indefinite amount of Iphone, Ipad, and mac sales to me.  The ball is in APPLE's court to make this crap right.  Its not any of OUR faults for this account hacking, its THEIRS.  They require users to store their credit/debit card info in THEIR system and its OUR fault when this info in compromised?  Sorry, not buying that.  Ok, read the user agreement, ALL SALES FINAL, OK, sales are final when purchased by the owner of the account, not some chinese POS hacker.  Once again $65, will presumably cost apple $1000's from just one customer.  After reading many reviews, it seems i'm in the majority of people thinking this way.  GOOD BYE APPLE!!!!!

Add me to the list. Lucky thing is, I had actually locked my Debit Card down accidentally, as I forgot the telephone banking passkey just a few days before the hacking took place. Will be getting a new card issued, and have changed both my Apple ID password and my email password, and also removed my payment details. Lucky I guess, as I have checked the purchase history of my account and nothing has been purchased since my last purchase ( a film from the iTunes store). I guess I got off relatively lightly, just annoying that it happened the day befroe I go abroad for a week. Thank god for HSBC and their security!

This just happend to me as well. I received an email letting me know that my Shipping/address info and CC were changed in my account. Followed by 2 additional email within the next 2 minutes letting me know somebody had downloaded a game called Flight Tycoon. I instatly opened my computer to change my password. Then I logged back into my itunes acount and my giftcard balance had gone from $25.00 to just $0.02! I also noticed that my CC info was removed completely from the account. I think the CC was an outdated one, but I've been keeping an eye on my banking account to make sure nothing strange happens there. I got ahold of Apple support finally through "Fast lane," after making a few phone calls that seemed to run me around in circles. I got another email letting me know that they had used the giftcard balance to buy "in game currency in the Flight Tycoon game." Apple said they will refund my account, but I have no clue how somebody would have gotten my password. The only computer that my Apple ID has ever been logged on by me is in my home.

Something strange that happend the same day: I always seem to get 4-5 junk emails per night. When I wake up, I delete them from my Iphone. On this particular day, while swiping on one of the emails, it opened instead of giving me the option to delete. I then deleted it immidiately without clicking any link or anything, but maybe this possibly gave them what they needed?
