Q: iTunes store account hacked

I'm posting this just to share my story and get reactions. It's a little detailed but I thought worth sharing.

On November 23, 2010 I purchased a single song from the iTunes store for .99. I used store credit that I had from a gift card I received last year. It was the first purchase I had made since July 2010.

On November 25, 2010 I received a receipt for 2 more separate orders to my account. These were for over $50 in iPhones apps. Here's a sampling of some of the purchases:

1 eREAD isoshu, v1.5, Seller: ChengDu YueTong Internet Information Co. Ltd (17+)
2 Plants vs. Zombies, v1.3, Seller: PopCap Games, Inc. (iDP)
3 Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge, v1.1, Seller: Lucasfilm International Services Inc.
4 Asphalt 5, v1.2.6, Seller: Gameloft (9+)
5 Let's Golf!® 2, v1.0.1, Seller: Gameloft (4+)
6 Frames & FX for Photos, v2.5.1, Seller: Imikimi, LLC (12+)
7 Stenches: A Zombie Tale of Trenches, v1.0.1, Seller: Thunder Game Works (9+)

I do not have a credit card linked to my account, so these were made using my store credit.

I have only 1 computer authorized for my account (my personal home computer). I live alone and no one else touches my Powerbook but me. I also DO NOT own an iPhone, so I would have no interest in apps.

After I saw these bizarre purchases, I checked my account. I noticed 2 strange things: My account information had changed: My street address was correct, but city, state and zip had changed to: Towson, MD 21286-7840. I have never lived in Maryland. Also, I noticed that my password recovery answer had changed to "Murray" in response to a question about my mother's maiden name. That's decidedly NOT my mother's maiden name. Also, my birthdate had changed to an incorrect month and day.

I immediately changed my password and my recovery question/answer challenge.

I reported problems on all of these purchases and also contacted iTunes Account Support by e-mail.

Within 24 hours I received an e-mail from "Vicki" at iTunes Customer Support. She wrote:

"When reviewing over your account "name@domain.net" and the two reported orders, it shows that the content purchased within them was acquired from the computer that is currently authorized for your iTunes account. So I strongly advise that you do consult with those in your household regarding the purchases made, and the charges that resulted from those purchases."

Further:

"I have gone and reversed the charges for the two orders....You will see a store credit in three to five business days....Please note that this is a one-time exception, as the iTunes Store Terms and Conditions state that all sales are final."

I am pleased that Apple is refunding my store credit and replied so quickly.

However, it is simply impossible that these purchases were made from my computer. Again, my Powerbook is the only computer I have ever authorized to access my account, and I am the only person with access to it.

I am not sure how this happened. Any thoughts or similar experiences?

I was hacked last night. Some random in-app purchase from a Chinese app. I can't read, speak, or understand Chinese and never heard of this app but the moron spent $108 and change of my iTunes credit from the back to school deal. This is ridiculous, I emailed Apple last night but still haven't gotten a response yet.

Well, I guess I'm another in this very long list of people who have been hacked.  Mine was some program in a far eastern language I don't recognize.  I'm unsure how they got my password, but all my iTunes credit is gone.  I'm still waiting to hear from Apple about this.

It does bother me, however, that I had never heard about any of this until I started looking on Google.  I would think the best thing for Apple customer satisfaction is to be open about this, and to be proactive in making changes.  I'm hoping a security change is coming soon to better protect us from these attacks.  I understand no consumer information protection is perfect, but I will no longer trust Apple with any sensitive information until they better protect accounts from obvious hacks.

Got an email from Apple, they credited back the funds.  Still no answer to how they are keeping this from happening again though.

I'm running a Mac. Happened to me today. Three charges of $59.97 back to back, I changed my PW and then after I changed it they tried another for $39.95 which is showing that I owe on iTunes. Forget that. I was paypal funded and they immediately disputed on my behalf with iTunes but who knows. Plus, it's Sunday so there's no one to call. SO annoyed right now.

I have not accessed an itunes account since 2007 and had forgotten I had an account until this morning when an email from Apple thanked me for multiple purchases, which had been paid out of my Paypal account. I found the account (I used it for one day and never again) and changed the ID and PW but now can not get past the "Report A Problem" link to report it or ask for money back. It just sends me to the Support home page. And Apple support pages insist you tell them what device and OS was used to purchase (I dont know) in order to use their Express. This is a nightmare.

Does anyone know how to contact Apple without using their broken "Report a Link" system?

And before anyone tells me about how I should protect my PW, don't. I dont have it written down anywhere and did not even remember I had an account. This was not due to my sloppiness - this was an Apple security issue and they should refund my money. End of story.

By the way, I have had a Droid for years and the apps are free and never had anything stolen. What a crappy way to do business, Apple.

My App store / iTunes account has been hacked. About $25 worth of charges to a credit card that is not mine. How do I resolve this?

Now I have been hit, too.

Got the same email as you about purchases being made from a device not normally associated with my Apple ID. I wonder why Apple doesn't require you to authorize your devices first? This would seem like such a simple fix to this problem?

In my case, someone download Cartel Wars (a free app) and then two 500 point packages at $12.99 each! Plus tax, that's almost $30 bucks!

What can one do? I opened a complaint ticket, but wasn't sure what else to do.

Is there any way to find out which device (i.e. get the serial number) made the purchases?

    Thanks!

Got the SAME exact thing this morning. Changed my password immediately.

I had a Metal Storm in-app purchase of $4.99 (I think the company who created it is the culprit) as well as some chinese app for $49.99. My CC information was removed and the account only had a gift card balance (which is now non-existent). This is ridiculous!

If I may ask: what do you mean your credit card information was "removed"? This scares the crap out of me.

I believe the removal of my CC information was on behalf of apple, since they were courteous enough to email me that purchases were being made on a device I hadn't authorized. I believe it may either be 1) Z2Live 2) A gamecenter issue 3) The giftcard issue (Back to School Promo gift cards).

I just think the Apple should automatically deny App downloads of any kind on devices not authorized to our accounts. It makes sense. This is alarming and concerning.

Apple removes your cc info whenever unauthorized access occurs. I just find it to be an oxymoron to say an unauthorized device was authorized to use my account.

Whenever you purchase something on a new device, iTunes asks you to verify your details.

The security code on the back of your cc. If not entered correctly iTunes removes your cc info from your account, hackers only have access to any gift card balance you have left

That's why you get the email stating your cc info has changed.

This gets explained about every other page.

Next there will be a "I'm done with apple, I'm buying android tomorrow" or switching to amazon...

Just to provide some more background:

    • I am using a PC
    • I rarely connect my iDevices to iTunes (I pretty much use them over WiFi and buy apps on the devices themselves)
    • I had no gift card credit in my account
    • I had PayPal as my payment means and not a credit card
    • none of my devices were used in the last days to purchase anything
    • The App responsible for the purchases, Cartel Wars, is a new app released in the last so many days (October 14th)
