Q: iTunes store account hacked

I'm posting this just to share my story and get reactions. It's a little detailed but I thought worth sharing.

On November 23, 2010 I purchased a single song from the iTunes store for .99. I used store credit that I had from a gift card I received last year. It was the first purchase I had made since July 2010.

On November 25, 2010 I received a receipt for 2 more separate orders to my account. These were for over $50 in iPhones apps. Here's a sampling of some of the purchases:

1 eREAD isoshu, v1.5, Seller: ChengDu YueTong Internet Information Co. Ltd (17+)
2 Plants vs. Zombies, v1.3, Seller: PopCap Games, Inc. (iDP)
3 Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge, v1.1, Seller: Lucasfilm International Services Inc.
4 Asphalt 5, v1.2.6, Seller: Gameloft (9+)
5 Let's Golf!® 2, v1.0.1, Seller: Gameloft (4+)
6 Frames & FX for Photos, v2.5.1, Seller: Imikimi, LLC (12+)
7 Stenches: A Zombie Tale of Trenches, v1.0.1, Seller: Thunder Game Works (9+)

I do not have a credit card linked to my account, so these were made using my store credit.

I have only 1 computer authorized for my account (my personal home computer). I live alone and no one else touches my Powerbook but me. I also DO NOT own an iPhone, so I would have no interest in apps.

After I saw these bizarre purchases, I checked my account. I noticed 2 strange things: My account information had changed: My street address was correct, but city, state and zip had changed to: Towson, MD 21286-7840. I have never lived in Maryland. Also, I noticed that my password recovery answer had changed to "Murray" in response to a question about my mother's maiden name. That's decidedly NOT my mother's maiden name. Also, my birthdate had changed to an incorrect month and day.

I immediately changed my password and my recovery question/answer challenge.

I reported problems on all of these purchases and also contacted iTunes Account Support by e-mail.

Within 24 hours I received an e-mail from "Vicki" at iTunes Customer Support. She wrote:

"When reviewing over your account "name@domain.net" and the two reported orders, it shows that the content purchased within them was acquired from the computer that is currently authorized for your iTunes account. So I strongly advise that you do consult with those in your household regarding the purchases made, and the charges that resulted from those purchases."

Further:

"I have gone and reversed the charges for the two orders....You will see a store credit in three to five business days....Please note that this is a one-time exception, as the iTunes Store Terms and Conditions state that all sales are final."

I am pleased that Apple is refunding my store credit and replied so quickly.

However, it is simply impossible that these purchases were made from my computer. Again, my Powerbook is the only computer I have ever authorized to access my account, and I am the only person with access to it.

I am not sure how this happened. Any thoughts or similar experiences?

I have a similar problem.... My account too has been hacked and I received an email asking me to change my password. I did so, not suspecting anything because my mom bought a new iPhone around that time and I thought she auldve used it to download an app. But then I noticed in my purchased apps, apps that neither of us bought (I asked her).

After updating my iPad to iOS 5, I wanted to activate my FaceTime for the first time (I know its strange but I hadn't done so since I bought the iPad!) when I tried doing that, a message said that I can't use that account because it is already being used on another device.

I am facing the same problem with my iCloud activation. It says it will send a verication email to my apple ID and I never receive anything!!! I tried several times and I really don't receive any verification emails.

I would really really really REALLY appreciate any help on this... How do I get my account back? Can I get my FaceTime and iCloud accounts back?

My account was hacked on 10/17. I received two Itunes receipts, each for a $50 gift certificate. The street address was still mine, but the city/state were not. The Billed to information was not for one of my cards. My email address in Itunes was changed, as well as my password and security question. I had a valid credit card linked to my account, but no unauthorized charges were made to this card. Apple restored everything, but offered no explanation other than my account was modified at 3:30AM on 10/17.

On Thursday, 10/13, I had activated a new Iphone on my imac, where I was required to enter my Itunes credentials. I am paranoid that I have a key logger on the mac, but the number of issues in this thread are eerily similar. Maybe this is part of a larger Apple problem?

    I expect more from Apple!

Apple fixed my account and told me to change my account information. My account is now disabled.  I had to change it all - country, address and billing information. Now I wait to hear back from Apple via email. Why can't I call to get this resolved???

And now the guy at Apple that supposedly fixed my account is off until Friday. So he won't read my reply until then. There has to be a better way.

Frustrating, I know.  Everyone on here has gone thru the same thing.

The reason it is handled by email is people are very abusive toward support people. If it is done thru email, the staff doesn't have to sit there and listen to a bunch of people telling them how they would run the company, solve the problem, etc.  If you write all of that in an email, they can skip over it. There is also a record of the exact exchange, none of the "he said, she said" stuff.

I was told my "rep" was off for a couple of days, and my account was fixed anyway, with his name on the letter. He either worked overtime or someone else handled it under his name.  Most of them use an assumed name, anyway.

I was hacked in May and loss $50 gift card.  Apple gave it back.  Today they would not let me do updates unless I verify my account.  They said someone was trying to change my password.

    Add me to the list.

After upgrading to iOS 5, app store showed items to update. When I clicked update all, the message flipped to Chinese.

Foolishly, and against better judgement, I typed in my password. $40 charge came today for some of the most random app purchases possible. I'm doing a factory restore of my phone and ipad just to be sure. ***** to be hacked, but we all probably should have been more careful. At least it sounds like apple is being good about refunds.

My account has been restored. Took a few days, but otherwise not too painful.

Just been hacked, first time ever 7.99 Sterling for 798ArtZone. Have reported it so here is hoping. My CC details have disappeared I assume because of the warning i got that another pc had purchased something. Seems odd that you have to authorise a device, but this wasn't.

    Also happened to me.

Seems that iTunes gift card credit is an easy target.

The automated email says the purchase relates to the Kingdom Conquest game, same as many others here. I haven't received a receipt, so I presume it was an in-app purchase. £44 is gone from my balance, leaving it with pennies left.

Why are people using UNauthorised devices able to purchase things from my account?

I am very saddened and surprised that the first time I'm hacked, it's via my Apple ID. I expected a lot more from Apple. This is very worrying.

If there is some kind of security hole in the Kingdom Conquest game, why not just remove the app from the store?

+1 for another hacked account, my password was secure (nonsense word and numbers) and not one I have used on other sites but when I tried to access my Apple ID account (I was checking my my warranty status) it told me the account was suspended. I reset the password and got access back but noticed that my credit card details were gone and that there were purchases on my account which I did not authorise.

Familiar story. The only difference being that most people seem to have app purchases, whoever hacked my account purchased a bunch of French techno music and a Darren Hayes video....odd...

Anyway, for some reason iTunes is reporting an error when I try to view the purchases via iTunes (using the "see all" link on the account info page), I only know what was purchased by using iTunes on my iPhone.

I have had to submit an express support request. Like others, I don't really care about the $20 I lost, I just want to know how this happened and how to stop it happening again!

This just happened to me while attempting to update a couple of Apps on my iPhone using my university's secure WiFi.  After I clicked 'Update All', I got the message saying "Your Apple ID has been disabled".  I'm not at home so I can't check iTunes there, but I checked recent purchases on the phone and there's nothing there.  No abnormal recent iTunes purchase receipts lately either.  I reset my password and tried to update the Apps again..no luck.  So I filled out an iTunes Express Support request and I'll see what happens. There are a couple of weird things that have happened lately though and I don't know if they are related.  In September, I got a new CC and I changed my billing info in iTunes to reflect that correctly.  With that new billing info, I successfully made several purchases over the next few weeks.  Some time after that, I updated to the latest iTunes (10.5 I think) and tried to make some more purchases, but got some message about my billing info being incorrect.  I checked and for some reason someone else's billing info from the state of Georgia had been entered there.  My name was correct but the CC #, exp date, city, state, and ZIP were all wrong.  Thinking this was some weird iTunes error with the new version, I changed all the info to mine.  In the last few weeks, I've made several purchases without any trouble.  I don't usually purchase things from my iPhone but I often will update Apps and have never had any trouble doing that.

LIke I said, I don't know if the error and the old billing issue are related or not but it's hard not to wonder.
