Q: iTunes store account hacked

I'm posting this just to share my story and get reactions. It's a little detailed but I thought worth sharing.

On November 23, 2010 I purchased a single song from the iTunes store for .99. I used store credit that I had from a gift card I received last year. It was the first purchase I had made since July 2010.

On November 25, 2010 I received a receipt for 2 more separate orders to my account. These were for over $50 in iPhones apps. Here's a sampling of some of the purchases:

1 eREAD isoshu, v1.5, Seller: ChengDu YueTong Internet Information Co. Ltd (17+)
2 Plants vs. Zombies, v1.3, Seller: PopCap Games, Inc. (iDP)
3 Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge, v1.1, Seller: Lucasfilm International Services Inc.
4 Asphalt 5, v1.2.6, Seller: Gameloft (9+)
5 Let's Golf!® 2, v1.0.1, Seller: Gameloft (4+)
6 Frames & FX for Photos, v2.5.1, Seller: Imikimi, LLC (12+)
7 Stenches: A Zombie Tale of Trenches, v1.0.1, Seller: Thunder Game Works (9+)

I do not have a credit card linked to my account, so these were made using my store credit.

I have only 1 computer authorized for my account (my personal home computer). I live alone and no one else touches my Powerbook but me. I also DO NOT own an iPhone, so I would have no interest in apps.

After I saw these bizarre purchases, I checked my account. I noticed 2 strange things: My account information had changed: My street address was correct, but city, state and zip had changed to: Towson, MD 21286-7840. I have never lived in Maryland. Also, I noticed that my password recovery answer had changed to "Murray" in response to a question about my mother's maiden name. That's decidedly NOT my mother's maiden name. Also, my birthdate had changed to an incorrect month and day.

I immediately changed my password and my recovery question/answer challenge.

I reported problems on all of these purchases and also contacted iTunes Account Support by e-mail.

Within 24 hours I received an e-mail from "Vicki" at iTunes Customer Support. She wrote:

"When reviewing over your account "name@domain.net" and the two reported orders, it shows that the content purchased within them was acquired from the computer that is currently authorized for your iTunes account. So I strongly advise that you do consult with those in your household regarding the purchases made, and the charges that resulted from those purchases."

Further:

"I have gone and reversed the charges for the two orders....You will see a store credit in three to five business days....Please note that this is a one-time exception, as the iTunes Store Terms and Conditions state that all sales are final."

I am pleased that Apple is refunding my store credit and replied so quickly.

However, it is simply impossible that these purchases were made from my computer. Again, my Powerbook is the only computer I have ever authorized to access my account, and I am the only person with access to it.

I am not sure how this happened. Any thoughts or similar experiences?

Powerbook G4, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Our iTunes account was also hacked last night for a Sega game worth $49.00.  We sent a message to Express Lane but haven't heard back yet.  Our address wasn't changed, but I did call the Apple store and the lady treated me like I didn't have a brain and wanted to get off the phone as soon as she could.  I only wanted to check with them to see if there was anything else I could do.  Oh well, hopefully my daughter will get her $$$$$ back.

This has eaten my whole day.

I read my emails this morning and someone hacked my  itunes overnight.  iTunes support is HORRIBLE. I am calling corporate tomorrow and not taking no for an answer.

Some ******* in China stole my itunes credits and used my paypal account to buy more.  HOOLAI GAME LIMITED. They bought a "diamond pack 4 hd" for 29.99 multiple times.

I've changed passwords, secret answers, disconnected paypal from iTunes, and sent over 10 emails to iTunes suck support.  Itunes has asked me to charge my account again for 29.99 before I can use my itunes account.  Unreal.

Here is the string of emails.

    Dear Wendy,

Good day. This is Raven from iTunes Store Support Team which answers nontechnical questions about billing, customer accounts, downloading purchases, and iTunes Store content.

I understand that someone hacked and stole $30 on your Store credit and I am aware of you were having all of this difficulty right now with iTunes Store and I assure you that I am here to help with your concern.

While processing your order, I have been unable to get authorization for the purchase M1KHQB2DHF.

The best way to resolve this issue is to contact your credit card company and advise them of the situation. Please make sure your billing information for the iTunes Store matches your credit card company’s records exactly.

Apple will continue to try to get authorization on this credit card for the outstanding balance for the next seven days. Until this balance is paid in full, you will not be able to make any new purchases from the iTunes Store. After that it was settled, we can offer refund to the amount you have used and investigate on the unauthorized purchase made.

Thank you for being an iTunes Store customer. Apple appreciates your business.

    Sincerely,

    Raven

    Dear Wendy,

Thank you for writing back and the opportunity to help you today. Glad to be of service. This is Raven assisting you again. Under the circumstances the iTunes Store cannot reverse the charges for the unauthorized purchases.

If you suspect you are the victim of identity theft, consider following these recommendations:

    - Contact the fraud departments of any consumer reporting company to place a fraud alert on your credit report.

    - Close the accounts that you believe have been used without your knowledge.

Thank you for being an iTunes Store customer.

    Sincerely,

    Raven

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to assist you.

    Dear Wendy,

    Sincerely,

    Raven

They stole 30 of itunes credit to pay for this so how in the **** do I still owe the 32.12??????  It shows I was only hacked once for the 32.12????? Seriously let's bring our customer service back to the US. These people have NO idea what they are doing and are sending out scripted replies.  How can one of the biggest tech companies in the US have no phone support?  I work a job where I have nothing better to do than sit at my desk and be online and call apple tomorrow repeatedly.  I cannot believe they wont fix this for me?!

Carlo - here is what happened:

    1) china guy hacked my account

    2) itunes used my 30 credits for what the hacker bought ($29.99 and tax which brought it over the 30 credits)

    3) the purchase was over $30 so it used my pay pal for the remainder

    4) my account is showing that I still owe what the hacker bought

    5) the hacker purchase was paid with the stored itunes credits and pay pal

    6) why would it be trying to hit my card if it was already paid for (see receipt pasted below)

    7) iTunes support wants me to pay for the purchase the hacker made AGAIN! no way I will ever do that

LOL, sounds like Apple Reality Distortion Field comes though again, pretening the account was not hacked and not really investigating the complaint.

So what if the account was credited? If it was hacked, they could have accesssed other information and Apple should be investigating this.

Probably you have never had an account hacked so don't understand how upsetting it is. so keep spouting the Apple clone propaganda for those brownie points.

My Yahoo account was hacked last year, contacts copied, all emails deleted and false letters sent contacts requsting mony.

Much to their credit, Yahoo made a quick and full investigation acknowledgeing the problem, advising me what to do and advising me of other potential accounts that could be affeted based on my permissions, and retoring my mail.

Apple should be taking this more seriously.

There could be a lot of possiblities... but itunes still needs your debit/credit card or a  card to fix the situation. Its like you rent a car... they dont charge your account until you bring the car back; how ever they often will put a hold on your account for a reduced amount so you think you have a lot more money in the checking account. Or It is like you go to get gas, or go to a resturant... if you pay for a $20 tab and leave a $10 tip... There is a hold placed on the account until the end of day transaction is batched sent to the merchant. Ok... here is a hypothetical situation.. lets say you had your credit card number entered into itunes but you were off by one digit or you typed in the three digit wrong that is on the back of the card... well all of a suddin it becomes a totally new card number... now hear me out.. what if you had the wrong infomation on file, and some chinese guy is makes a purchase with his credit card but some how you get his bill because you entered his number in by mistake or some where a long the line some one pushed a transaction through, and it effected yours account... you still need have your correct credit card number on file. if there is a problem... all you do is click "report a problem" and send them an email, and it will be taken care of. It is as if you went to a place that has valet parking, and then then the valet moved your car to be parked but then you go inside and you realize you gave the wrong set of keys to the valet driver, so you go back out side, to give them the right keys, and to your suprise they were able to move your car with the first set of keys... The first set of keys you gave the valet was from your husbands similar model car, but your thinking how did they move it if you gave them the wrong set of keys...ok well it was a fluke... but they still need your keys now to bring back the car to you... because your husbands does not seem to work a second time... but it worked the first time, but strangely not the second... It could be just a fluke. But to fix the situation, you need to give the valet your correct keys so he can bring the car back to you.

    Carlo.

They used itunes credits stored from a itunes gift card on my itunes account. NOT MY CREDIT CARD. Clearly my account was hacked.

The numbers are correct on my stored credit card on itunes.  I haven't changed my card associated with my itunes account for over a year.

I work in finance I understand what a hold is, etc. etc.

What I DON'T understand is if my itunes account has PAID for the hackers' inapp software aleady with my itunes gift card stored credits and my pay pal WHY would itunes try to hit my card?  I understand the pinging my account to see if they can use this card and if it's legit.  But I also do not understand my account showing an open balance if it clearly has been paid and I've received a RECEIPT for the hackers purchase!?

Why is there a balance on my account?  Even if the card was unusable - it was paid for with itunes gift card credits and pay pal????

I've read on this forum that iTunes gave back the itunes gift card store credit after this happened with another user.  So I know they CAN do it; the question is, WILL they?  I need to talk to someone who is in the US and understands this.

I managed to get a refund of my money pretty quickly and without fuss. There was a suggestion around preventing identity theft but nothing too condescending. There is no way anyone has my password so I'm convinced people are accessing apple systems.
