Q: iTunes store account hacked

I'm posting this just to share my story and get reactions. It's a little detailed but I thought worth sharing.

On November 23, 2010 I purchased a single song from the iTunes store for .99. I used store credit that I had from a gift card I received last year. It was the first purchase I had made since July 2010.

On November 25, 2010 I received a receipt for 2 more separate orders to my account. These were for over $50 in iPhones apps. Here's a sampling of some of the purchases:

1 eREAD isoshu, v1.5, Seller: ChengDu YueTong Internet Information Co. Ltd (17+)
2 Plants vs. Zombies, v1.3, Seller: PopCap Games, Inc. (iDP)
3 Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge, v1.1, Seller: Lucasfilm International Services Inc.
4 Asphalt 5, v1.2.6, Seller: Gameloft (9+)
5 Let's Golf!® 2, v1.0.1, Seller: Gameloft (4+)
6 Frames & FX for Photos, v2.5.1, Seller: Imikimi, LLC (12+)
7 Stenches: A Zombie Tale of Trenches, v1.0.1, Seller: Thunder Game Works (9+)

I do not have a credit card linked to my account, so these were made using my store credit.

I have only 1 computer authorized for my account (my personal home computer). I live alone and no one else touches my Powerbook but me. I also DO NOT own an iPhone, so I would have no interest in apps.

After I saw these bizarre purchases, I checked my account. I noticed 2 strange things: My account information had changed: My street address was correct, but city, state and zip had changed to: Towson, MD 21286-7840. I have never lived in Maryland. Also, I noticed that my password recovery answer had changed to "Murray" in response to a question about my mother's maiden name. That's decidedly NOT my mother's maiden name. Also, my birthdate had changed to an incorrect month and day.

I immediately changed my password and my recovery question/answer challenge.

I reported problems on all of these purchases and also contacted iTunes Account Support by e-mail.

Within 24 hours I received an e-mail from "Vicki" at iTunes Customer Support. She wrote:

"When reviewing over your account "name@domain.net" and the two reported orders, it shows that the content purchased within them was acquired from the computer that is currently authorized for your iTunes account. So I strongly advise that you do consult with those in your household regarding the purchases made, and the charges that resulted from those purchases."

Further:

"I have gone and reversed the charges for the two orders....You will see a store credit in three to five business days....Please note that this is a one-time exception, as the iTunes Store Terms and Conditions state that all sales are final."

I am pleased that Apple is refunding my store credit and replied so quickly.

However, it is simply impossible that these purchases were made from my computer. Again, my Powerbook is the only computer I have ever authorized to access my account, and I am the only person with access to it.

I am not sure how this happened. Any thoughts or similar experiences?

Carlo TD seems to be presuming ignorance of all scammed customers.  The links are interesting, but they contain no new news and there is NO way that is how I got the iTunes scam.  How did they get access to my data?  I remain clueless.  That is why I filed a report with Apple and a report with the police, hoping someone would apprehend them and learn more about their data gathering.

I'm thankful that Apple has the security tools to alert me when a purchase was made that might not be authorized.  I am disappointed they can't use that same technology to thwart the fraud before it happens, instead of dealing with it after the fact by sending out robot emails that I need to protect my password better.  There is something else going on here, but I don't know what.  I was not phished.

Apple seems to just be washing their hands of it all.  I guess they make enough money they can issue refunds (thanks Apple) and just treat it as a cost of doing business.  But it would take remarkably little code to prevent the purchase rather than issue a warning email.

Agreed. I went through all the links and see no earthly correlation of any of them to the converastion/problem at hand.

The point is that there is a serious problem that has existed for quite some time. And from all of this it is glaringly appearent that Apple is totally ignoring the fundamental points of all of this and only doing as little as possible to WHAT?! Not taking care of the situation? And they are pushing us to the "cloud". Not with this level of blatant imcompetence only addressing the minimal to try to make a feeble appearance of "due diligence. If only this were taken in the same light as CarrierIQ. Invade my privacy and I'll sue you. Steal my money and . . .

    Carlo,

Do you work for Apple or any company associated with Apple?

You seem to be repeating the exact same information that iTunes supports spews.

I too was not scammed by phishing, virus, or malware that could have found out my account information.  Neither have I given out my username or password.

There are two constants in this whole mess:  1.  Apple  2.  Apple's unwillingness to address the issue properly.

Microsoft Windows Phone is looking sweeter by the day.

    Yosmel,

I totally agree with everything you have stated.

I would be more forgiving of Apple if they would just come clean.

Well...I had my account hacked yesterday.  They bought two $50 iTunes gift cards.  The funny thing is that they got my account id (email address) and name, but they used another address (in Minneapolis, MN) and someone else's credit card #.  The bad thing was that they took over my account, changed the password and then changed the email address and basically made my account disappear.  I couldn't do anything.  Thankfully, I have a new iPhone and called the customer support and they were able to re-open my account and make the appropriate changes to make sure it was back in my control.

They had to do this via a chat with an iTunes specialist and took about 5-7 minutes to reset everything, but as far as I know I'm back up and running.  It's a scary feeling to see these emails that you bought something when you didn't, but it sounds like this is a pretty well run scam.

My account was hacked last night.  Thankfully I was at my computer but also imagine the horror as I watch my itunes account balance shrink.  I got that email that purchases were being made to a computer no usually associates with my account.  What's the point of sending the email if they're gonna go ahead and let them proceed to to download stuff.  I usually use giftcards for purchase so I deleted my paypal account I also went into paypal is deauthorized itunes.  I just got an email reply from apple it's kind of annoying that you have to email back and forth and that this can't be solved with a phone call.  I also changed the passwords on my email accounts.  Should I be worried about anything else or is this isolated to itunes.  I think it is I didn't see any activity on my bank or paypal account but I'm just kinda freaked out.

My account was just hacked and all devices de-autherized, purchases of Chinese apps and some ICloud services purchased. I was at my computer and cannot believe that Apple allows the purchases even though they know they are suspicious. Pure greed in my eyes. Glad I'm phasing out all Apple products in my life and changing over to the GOOGLE universe. Open source for all! I hope Apple will do the correct thing and come clean, change the security policy for device changes and wise up. This is just one of many things eating away at the trust consumers have in them as a coorporation willing to do the right thing.

I guess the thing that really bothers me is Apple is not forthcoming and there is no news on any major tech or news outlet of the issue.

I can understand Apple not wanting to advertise problems but to blame the users saying that they are the reason why this happens, is just plain ridiculous.

It is just like when the iPhone 4 first came out and there was the issue with the antennae.  Deny the problem until you are forced to deal with it.

    Very bad Apple!

I'm thoroughly confused. Isn't the point of having "authorized" devices on your account to only allow those "authorized" to access your account?! So I would imagine the result of that would/should be, that any "unauthorized" device be denied access and the ability to do commerce?

    One would think . . .

So why isn't this happening? It would save many headaches. I remember having to have my or friends accounts "reset" to wipe old or sold machines from them to either secure the account or be able to add new ones once the "quota" was full. Apple would only allow one wipe per year. It seemed to be that they had it all in hand. Guess not.

Oh well, so much for the squishy comfort of Apple. Don't think I'm gonna do anything with iCloud if this is what is happening with iTunes and Apple conducting themselves in the manner that we are seeing here. To tell you the truth I'm, on certain matters, and am not, on others, surprised. I always knew there'd come the day. And only a matter of time before something big "breaks" on this.

"It only takes one bad Apple to . . ."

My account was yesterday also hacked...!!! It was the app "KingdomConquest" and they have done a lot of In-App purchase in the amount of 83 Euros!!!

I have a ClickandBuy account for my purchase and the money will be charged from my bank account. So I will arrange a return debit note...

Yesterday I also have informed iTuned immediately about this unauthorised purchase! And the only reply I got was that they have deactivated my ID because there were some unauthorized access.

Contacting iTunes for solving problems is really B u l l s h i t! It's very complicated. So I have informed them that I will arrange a return debit note and that they can call me if they don't agree with it...

HOW do you report bogus charges?  I was getting random charges on my credit card from itunes and changed my password and deleted my credit card, checking "no payment on file", and today I see a $12.98 charge on my credit card from itunes!!!  How does that even happen?

Just an update. After closing my account and blocking my access to the transaction numbers, ITunes has not been in contact. The email asked me to reply and let them know when I wanted my account reactivated, this was over 24 hours ago and no response. If I ran my business like this I would have no customers. Must be nice to have such great products no one gives a crap that the corporate response when there is a problem is ignore, deny, lie and ignore. You've lost me for life after this Apple.

Apple only a retailer, just like any other retailer. I do not understand why so many people can not comprehend this. Don't be so quick to judge, or make statements that are not based on fact, or insult others by saying they insist on saying the world is flat. I never said the world was flat. At the same time I am able to look at it from both sides of the window. Also you can not say you have not been phished, because you wouldnt know unless it happened. Take a look at this link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqRZGhiHGxg
