Q: iTunes store account hacked

I'm posting this just to share my story and get reactions. It's a little detailed but I thought worth sharing.

On November 23, 2010 I purchased a single song from the iTunes store for .99. I used store credit that I had from a gift card I received last year. It was the first purchase I had made since July 2010.

On November 25, 2010 I received a receipt for 2 more separate orders to my account. These were for over $50 in iPhones apps. Here's a sampling of some of the purchases:

1 eREAD isoshu, v1.5, Seller: ChengDu YueTong Internet Information Co. Ltd (17+)
2 Plants vs. Zombies, v1.3, Seller: PopCap Games, Inc. (iDP)
3 Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge, v1.1, Seller: Lucasfilm International Services Inc.
4 Asphalt 5, v1.2.6, Seller: Gameloft (9+)
5 Let's Golf!® 2, v1.0.1, Seller: Gameloft (4+)
6 Frames & FX for Photos, v2.5.1, Seller: Imikimi, LLC (12+)
7 Stenches: A Zombie Tale of Trenches, v1.0.1, Seller: Thunder Game Works (9+)

I do not have a credit card linked to my account, so these were made using my store credit.

I have only 1 computer authorized for my account (my personal home computer). I live alone and no one else touches my Powerbook but me. I also DO NOT own an iPhone, so I would have no interest in apps.

After I saw these bizarre purchases, I checked my account. I noticed 2 strange things: My account information had changed: My street address was correct, but city, state and zip had changed to: Towson, MD 21286-7840. I have never lived in Maryland. Also, I noticed that my password recovery answer had changed to "Murray" in response to a question about my mother's maiden name. That's decidedly NOT my mother's maiden name. Also, my birthdate had changed to an incorrect month and day.

I immediately changed my password and my recovery question/answer challenge.

I reported problems on all of these purchases and also contacted iTunes Account Support by e-mail.

Within 24 hours I received an e-mail from "Vicki" at iTunes Customer Support. She wrote:

"When reviewing over your account "name@domain.net" and the two reported orders, it shows that the content purchased within them was acquired from the computer that is currently authorized for your iTunes account. So I strongly advise that you do consult with those in your household regarding the purchases made, and the charges that resulted from those purchases."

Further:

"I have gone and reversed the charges for the two orders....You will see a store credit in three to five business days....Please note that this is a one-time exception, as the iTunes Store Terms and Conditions state that all sales are final."

I am pleased that Apple is refunding my store credit and replied so quickly.

However, it is simply impossible that these purchases were made from my computer. Again, my Powerbook is the only computer I have ever authorized to access my account, and I am the only person with access to it.

I am not sure how this happened. Any thoughts or similar experiences?

I just called Apple's customer support number, which is 1-800-676-2775 .  I said "speak to representative", and just say "no" to the questions the automated teller askes you.  What happened to me was I had to give my name and a serial number for one of my Apple devices.

After this, I got connected to somebody in the fraud department, who took my information and asked for the fradulent charges and order numbers.  He couldn't get a hold of the people to give me a refund, so he referred me to Apple's Express Lane, where I said what had happened and the fradulent charges/order numbers.  I got an email about 2 hours after saying that they had refunded the money.

So the moral of the story: just call Apple's main customer support line, they will get everything sorted out.

I wasted over 2 hours today sitting on hold with apple support! Since I still haven't gotten my money back I decided to call apple/ iTunes today, after being on hold for 30min I finally get to speak to a representative, she was friendly and said she would help me with my issue and told me to hold because she had to chat with someone in the fraud department, she said that she would make sure to solve this problem so that I wouldn't have to call back again, finally she gets back and tell me that iTunes have refunded my money to PayPal, I said what? It doesnt show up on my PayPal account, then she said that I would have to call PayPal, ok, so I did.

I call PayPal and talk to a representative there and he says that he can't see any refunds to my account from iTunes and that I would have to call apple/iTunes!!!

I call apple/ iTunes back again, sit on hold for ever! Finally get to talk to someone, he puts me on hold again, when he finally gets back he says: we are going to have to escalate this to a higher level and I am going to have to send you to my manager ( or something like that ) ok, sit on hold again  for ever and finally get to talk to the next person and he says: I am sorry but there isn't anything we can do about this now because iTunes is closed, aargh!

So, now I have to call back AGAIN! Tomorrow morning at 6:00AM! Christmas eve nonetheless!

I am getting sick and tired of apple/iTunes! This should have been taken care of and be over with several days ago!

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one dealing with this. Today my account was charged twice for Order & Chaos Online.. two charges of $49.99 each.

If Apple continues to have problems with this application and they're refunding the money, you would think...to save themselves money...they would stop having this developer sell their software in their App store.

    This is absolutely ridiculous!

I can't call until tomorrow because of the holiday, obviously. That was no coincidence on the hackers' part, I'm sure.

Me too!  Merry Christmas...  Late last night, got email from Itunes saying I made a purchase to an unkown device.  The app had a Chinese title, so I was pretty darn sure I hadn't ordered it.  I'm sure Apple has the technology to block that from happening, but whatever.

The charges went to my Paypal account, and when I spoke to them they were very helpful and reassured me that Itunes was generally very cooperative about these things.

When I spoke to Itunes help at the phone number a couple of posts above, I got someone who may have been extremely hungover, and whose idea of putting me on 'hold' was to just stop talking (I could hear him breathing).

Anyway, I just got an email from Paypal saying that I would get a refund in 5 to 7 days.

In the meantime, I changed my credit card choice on Itunes to 'None' and changed just about every password I could think of.

My account was hacked on 12/22/2011. Here are the details of my experience...

    - Traversing the Apple voice-mail automated menu is VERY frustrating. They DON"T want you to talk to a human. However, here are some tips to reach a human. At the beginning say "Representative Please", then when the machine starts to ask about your product and problem, just mumble until it gives up and connects you to a human.

    - I received two email receipts on the same day a week ago from iTunes. One was legit for $2.99. The other was bogus for $40. The bogus email came second and showed my billing address as having changed from Calif to Pennsylvania. It also referenced a bogus credit card number.

    - I tried to use the iTunes website help screen to reset my password, but the reset email never reached me.  That was frustrating.  But now I know that a hacker changed things on my account. They changed my account name. I thought they changed my birthday, thus iTunes would not accept my security questions when I tried to log into their help webpage. But now I realize it was the account name that had changed.

    - I could not log into the iTunes help website, since my account name had been changed. When I spoke with an apple rep, he told me that my email address had been changed by having the number 1 added to the end of my name before the @ sign. If you are experiencing similar problems, you may want to create a mailbox like that to see if you can get the reset email sent to you.

    - The Apple rep could not help me reset the iTunes password and account email, so I had to go to the website. I finally got through to a chat session. iTunes does not support phone contact of any kind. The chat rep was very understaning and helpful.  After explaining all the problems, he reset my account information back to what it was previously and I was able to log into my iTunes account.

    - This just speculation, but I suspect they've been seeing a lot of this lately.

I was hacked this morning...5 separate purchases for $150 through iTunes for in-app purchases that all ended up being charged to my PayPal account once my store credit had depleted. The hacker changed my apple id email address and physical address as well as my phone number. They purchased an app called Happy City (http://itunes.apple.com/cn/app//id459397568?mt=8) that appears to be Chinese and bought in game credit.

I was told by iTunes (via an Apple customer service rep chatting for me over the phone) that the purchases were non-refundable and that I needed to contact PayPal. They were very courteous and sympathetic, but unfortunatley couldn't do anything.

I then contacted PayPal and they promised to refund my money and that they'd investigate the incident.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Dave. Wow, five purchases at $150 each?

That's just crazy. I think Apple needs to seriously take a look at their functioning.

I think from now on I'm just going to purchase many $5 iTunes cards. When I want something, I'll redeem as many as I need to satisfy the amount. This way, I won't have much a balance there.

And, since I removed my credit card (and I don't have Paypal)...I have no backup fund account...so the crooked hackers would be stopped there.

I got a receipt for a movie I never purchased and then was told my account was frozen for security reasons. I was able to reset it and saw there is about 40 more dollars worth of purchases I did not make at all. PLEASE REFUND MY MONEY. I REALLY NEED THOSE $50. Can I call someone for help.

After 8 days I finally got an refund back from Paypal. I would advise anyone to contact iTunes prior to filing a dispute at Paypal. This way seems to get refunded faster than waiting on Paypal.
