time machine doesn't appear to open

not sure if anyone else is having his issue:

i have my backup drive connected and select "enter time machine". what happens is the menu bar at the top and the dock disappear, but it doesn't seem to fully enter time machine.

pressing esc brings back the menu bar and dock, so something's happening, just not correctly.

any ideas?
