AirPort Extreme-(VPN)

The AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) does not provide any VPN services. Instead, it is a VPN "pass-through" device.

With that said, the AEBS should allow most VPN connections between a VPN client on the local network to a remote VPN server or vice versa.

You also have the option to obtain a Mac with OS X Server already installed, like the Mac Mini with Snow Leopard Server.

The other option is to get a dedicated VPN device or a router that support VPN directly, like the Cisco RVS4000.

You do not need to purchase Mac OS X Server to have VPN capability. The regular Mac OS X operating system already has that. What you need is a tool to help you enable it. I have been using iVPN (http://macserve.org.uk/projects/ivpn/) and it has been working quite well. If you are using an Airport Extreme router, the latest Airport Utility update version 7.5.2 (which also contains a firmware update for the Airport Extreme router) breaks the VPN functionality. It appears that after installing this update on the router, it is no longer port-forwarding correctly to the computer installed with iVPN.

I had the same problem shortly after the upgrade to 7.5.2...

I did the 'by hand' setup of the VPN.

My fix was multiple uploads of the firmware followed by a hard reset...
You might try moving back to version 7.4.2 and then upgrading to 7.5.2.

My VPN seems to be working ok again...

I would like to jump in on this subject. I am trying to run my apple tv through my airport extreme. I need to mask the IP address so I can watch Netflix. How do I set up a vpn inside the airport? or do I have to run the apple tv off the iMac?

Is there any Apple product that has this capability.

Yes, OS X Server.

OS X Server is an operating system that would need to be installed on an Intel-based Mac. It would be similar to Windows Server 2008.
