Q: How to reset forgotten Restrictions password with iPhone restore?

Hi,

I set restrictions on my iphone to disable in-app purchases so that my children don't rack up a bill on my account. Unfortunately I've forgotten the password and now I need an in-app purchase for CoPilot navigation app.

Can I reset my iPhone and then restore from a backup to clear the restrictions password? If so, is there a step by step guide to do this? Much appreciate any help.

Boz

Cheers to you for trying to help people. Very much appreciated. I tried your solution on 2 devices both iPod touch 4g for over 3 hours with no success. I followed everything to the tee. I even rebackedup to see if the plist was changed and it was. Here is what I did. 1 backed up. 2 closed iTunes. 3 opened ibackupbot. 4 found the backup. 5. Located the file in home domain/library/preferences. 5 exported the springboard plist file to desktop because the built in editor didn't save. 6 opened the file in a plist editor. 7 changed the failed Attempts to 0. 8 added the strings written (copy/ paste) ( had to space the line before pasting so it matched the rest). 9 saved the file. 10

deleted the springboard file in ibackupbot. 11. Imported the newly edited file into the backup. 12 restored the file back to the devices with I backupbot.

Did not work after multiple attempts even though when I backhoes again it showed the new plist file.

The device still showed the same attempted passcodes as before.

The new file is always at the bottom of ibackupbot (don't think that matters).

One of my iPods has a lot more info after the country code thing but I add it in at the end anyway.

    Please help.

    Thank you very much.

Read my instructions on page 18 and try that.  Slightly different from Tomjr's.

Thanks! I tried it again with your instruction and it worked! One change I did though. Before I was copying and pasting from this thread in to the plist editor, this time i typed it directly. Also I'm not sure if before I put in 0 attempts instead of 1 failed attempt. Also I didn't delete the old springboard file, I just replaced it. Anyway Im very happy it worked.

Thank you everyone for your input.

PS Can App data be restored using ibackupbot if I want to restore data from a specific app?  Also editing app backup data to change things like points in games etc.?

Thanks walldogkl!!! I spent hours reading posts, backing up data, restoring my phone. In the end, your post was the one that helped me with my problem. Just to make it clear for people who are wondering about versions, I have the most updated version 6.1.3 (10B329), and it still worked.

Apple can't make life easier for its customers. I should really consider Android next time I want to buy a new phone.

I highly agree.  The only reason I'm dealing with Apple is because the head idiots in some departments here don't understand the limitations they are imposing on their workers with Apple products.

Yes, you should really opt for the device which much lower security. You can probably find an app that will let you break such passwords in an easy manner.

The problem is that if people can break into it anyway, what difference does it make? If my phone is stolen, chances are people who stole it know how to break into these devices better than a typical iphone users. If I can spend few hours simply seaching online and find a way to break into it, you think people who steal phones can't break into my phone because it is so secure?Furthurmore, it's not like you can go to an Apple store and ask them to help you with it even though you can prove it's your device. From what I read from posts, the advice they give you is to wipe everything from your phone, which I don't want to do with my phone.

I don't care what drivel you have read online, they don't break the password for Restrictions, they just put it in DFU mode, wipe it, and set it up as a new device.

Yeah. I am sure people who forgot their restriction password go to apple stores because they don't know how to set their phones as new devices.

    Thanks!

In reply to deggie, you're absolutely wrong. There are solutions which break the passcode and definitely don't set up as a new device, use DFU mode or anything similar. Search my previous posts in this thread.

RUssellelly, what you have previously mentioned about YouTube, can this be done on a PC?

What I've done won't directly work on a PC (since it needs two Apple specific apps). I'm sure some smart Windows coder could put something together to do the same, but it hasn't been done yet as far as I know.
