Q: How to reset forgotten Restrictions password with iPhone restore?

Hi,

I set restrictions on my iphone to disable in-app purchases so that my children don't rack up a bill on my account. Unfortunately I've forgotten the password and now I need an in-app purchase for CoPilot navigation app.

Can I reset my iPhone and then restore from a backup to clear the restrictions password? If so, is there a step by step guide to do this? Much appreciate any help.

Boz

    @ Marcin2011:

After opening the plist with textedit I see this:

    'SBParentalControlsMCContentRestrictions_  DCFLastDirectoryNumber_  SBWiFiDontAskShownVSystem_  SBDeviceLockBlocked[lock-

Is there a hidden number somewhere? I don't see an app named property list editor? should it be in my computer?

    Thanks in advance

You dont need an app named property list editor, since you obviously can read the file. I have the same message as you and for me the password was hidden way further down the text, actually in a longer code, T1234#@FA etc. My code was the four digit numbers hidden in the code, 1234 (not actuallt 1234 but anyway ). So search for four digits and good luck.

Thanks for the help of solving my problem.

Do you know how to use the windows version by chance?  I downloaded and installed the program (the trial version) but not sure what to look for beyond there.  I can see plist files where the backup folder is, but can't find the parental ctrls etc....

    Thanks.

I must say Marcin2011, that is the best and most useful post I have ever read in my life!!!  It worked! My wife restricted my son's phone and then promptly forgot it.  He is good at cracking things so it had to be something random.  What a mess.  He could not really use his phone after that...  I read your post just before I was headed to wipe his phone and start over.

I used backupiphoneextractor.com like you listed above.  They will let you decrypt two files without buying a license.  Since I knew what file I was going after I used the free version.  It worked.  I had the file.

I looked in notepad and with all the strange characters and such -- I did see one list of 4 numbers in a row.  I asked my wife and she said that there was no way this was the passcode.

Since I had 45 minutes until I could try a passcode again because I was in a "time-out" by apple, I looked for a plist editor for windows.  I found a totally free version names IpodRobot -- plist editor for windows by VowSoft which is available on softpedia or cnet for download.

I opened the file in there and looked down for the vairable that Marcin2011 mentioned and there it was  -- the same passcode I saw in notepad.

I waited the 30 minutes for my time-out to expire... I put it in and it worked!!!

Thank you.  Thank you.  Thank you.  Marcin2011!

Marcin2011 - You absolute bl**dy star! I've been struggling / getting annoyed with three defunct email accounts that were locked out on my phone & I was unable to add my new email due to this 'restrictions' password...

Thanks to you I have now unlocked it & all is well!!

I don't ever remember setting this code up but it did turn out to be a code I would've used about 3 years ago so I'm presuming that at some point down the line it was a lock for something else that grew to cover a multitude of things - when I set up my last email account (one of my staff) about a year ago on my phone, it was not locked out & I certainly didn't lock it myself but yet when I went to add this newest account I noticed it was all greyed out - given that I don't use this code anymore I had almost given up trying & then even after reading page one of this thread was about to wipe my phone but decided to check to see if jjkboswell got any more irate & found your post! This should be re-posted as a separate thread so that others will definitely find it. If you're ever near Manchester UK I will buy you a beer sir!

    Thanks Thanks Thanks again!!!

    Marcin2011, you're my hero!

    This worked like a charm...

Opened the .plist file in texteditor. Not much to understand there, but the 4 digits are well readable

Thank you sooo much!!! Life's easy again

I've downloaded the plist file and opened it both in notepad and a plist editor. No luck finding 4 digits anywhere in the file. I searched for each number individually (0,1,2, etc) just to make sure I wasn't seeing it - only found numbers in groups of 1 or 2 or many more than 4. It shows restrictions on, but neither my son nor I even remember setting up any passcode...and it's not in the file that everyone else is finding their numbers in. Any suggestions?

Thank you very much!  Huge help.

Ran into trouble decoding, lots of 0,1,2,3..., but nothing looking like a 4-digit pw, so followed suggestion of downloading Text Wrangler.  Done in under 1 min.  Very able to read now.

    Ironically, pw was 1234.  Ugh.

Highly recommend over complete reboot and wiping.

    Daughter very happy now.

Fantastic! After almost a year of being locked out and not having the heart to wipe out my messages and content, you are the first to give advice that actually works. Thanks so much!

I've read every post on the net and I've opened the plist file but this is the only parental controls I can find:

    "

            <key>SBParentalControlsFailedAttempts</key>

            <integer>8</integer>

            <key>SBParentalControlsMCContentRestrictions</key>

            <dict>

                <key>countryCode</key>

                <string>us</string>

            </dict>

            <key>sentmail-sound-identifier</key>

            <string>texttone:Sent Mail</string>

    "

From the various posts, the pin is usually where the 'sent mail sound identifier' is. I just can't find it. Please help?

I have iphone 3gs, ios5 (possibly the reason), PC.
