Q: How to reset forgotten Restrictions password with iPhone restore?

Hi,

I set restrictions on my iphone to disable in-app purchases so that my children don't rack up a bill on my account. Unfortunately I've forgotten the password and now I need an in-app purchase for CoPilot navigation app.

Can I reset my iPhone and then restore from a backup to clear the restrictions password? If so, is there a step by step guide to do this? Much appreciate any help.

Boz

IMPORTANT STUFF THEY DONT TELL YOU!

    1. Do NOT back up as encrypted files

You WILL NOT be able to do the plist edits - they wont save (despite you entering in the encryption password..)

Re back up NON encrypted - and you will be fine..

Wasted half a day on that..

SO I have this issue but my iphone backs up with encryption. Can't change that setting to unencrypted without the passcode. So then the ibackupbot trick works to the point of trying to import the revised springboard file but then resists and can't import because of the encryption.

    Any thoughts...?

    Thanks

Yes. It's the mac (desktop or laptop that this works on) so the settings for no encryption must be set there.

Thanks - but I can't see it as a back-up option in Itunes. I thought it was because of the setting on the Iphone...

Can you point me to it in ITunes?

    Thanks again

    1. Connect the phone to your computer
    2. Click on the iPhone button at the top right. If you don't see it click on the Library button (If you have the left menu list enabled click on it there instead)
    3. Under the "Backups" heading there is a checkbox "Encrypt iPhone backup"

    Thanks

My guess is that you have an MS Exchange account on your phone, and your IT department installed a security profile with it that requires the phone and backup to be encrypted.

Try some work domain passwords; it may be the one that you were using when you first installed the Exchange email account.

I am able to get to step 9 but this isn't there

    <key>SBParentalControlsPIN</key>

    <string>1234</string>

I am in no way tech savvy....so I honestly have no idea what that means.  All I know is my restrictions passcode is still there and I have no idea what to do to get it off.....Do you have any ideas?

I have only ever done iCloud backups until today when I did it to iTunes.  And the encryption was not checked when I did it.

Thank you so so so much for this!!! I was at this for more than 4 hours before finding this thread, so I am extremely grateful..... You have no idea! I was so frustrated, and was planning on restoring to factory settings.

For those trying to use the iphone backup extractor, don't do it! I have a macbook, so I had to install mono and go through a terminal window.... Just download the iBackupBot and save yourself the trouble.

For users with iOS 6 who are wondering, just follow MRCoffey's instructions (page 8 on this thread, I believe?). Worked perfectly on my iPhone 5! It also reset the amount of failed passcode attempts to nil It might have just been me, but once you edit the  springboard plist file on iBackupBot, there's a red button somewhere on the right that you click to exit AFTER you click save. It took me a while to figure out how to exit -___-

Big thanks also to BigBopper66 and DriftingTrumpet! I'm finally at peace
