Jul 4, 2011 3:37 PM in response to Roy 27inchby Mr. Luigi,Hi Roy, I've come to this discussion very late so probably no one will read this. Whatev...After reading some of the posts I'm wondering why some folks felt the need to critique your motivation for downloading that app and your curiosity about why the numbers didn't add to 256. I found the responses from those who actually supplied information very interesting. After reading this thread I downloaded the app and saw the same thing as you...the total RAM only added to about 200. The graphics chip explanation was helpful. I DO see value in knowing this information, contrary to popular feeling. When I ran the app I noticed that I had very little "Free" RAM available. I also noticed that my iPad was running a bit balky at the same time. I thought the two might be related. So I opened the apps in the background bar and started to shut down those apps. For a lot of the apps, shutting them down didn't free up a lot of RAM...until I got to SAFARI! Shutting down Safari freed up an incredible, relatively speaking, amount of RAM. I experimented further and found out that for each open web page I closed there was a big jump in Free RAM. Turns out it wasn't so much Safari eating up my RAM as those web pages that were still open. My point...Using this app told me that one of the best ways to keep your iPad running smooth with sufficient Free RAM is to close down open web pages in Safari (all browsers I suspect) if they are no longer needed. You can always just go to the apps in the background and totally shut down Safari, but that really is not necessary as long as you watch those open web pages and delete the ones not being used. Without using your app I'm pretty sure I would not have realized how easy it is to maximize your free RAM and keep the iPad running as best possible.

Oct 23, 2011 6:59 AM in response to Roy 27inchby igazz,I also had the same issue that Roy was experiencing which is how I stumbled upon this thread and I have to say, I am very disappointed with the 'attitude/tone' of some community members. I am a new ipad user and while browsing with Atomic web browser, I would often receive "Low Memory Warning"(s) . In an effort to understand iPad memory usage, I also installed a few memory/system Apps and also found that the amount of used / unused memory did not add up. eg. Memory used 98mb Free memory 6mb! So, there does seem to be some 'missing memory' that is not being reported by the Apps. I know that my memory isn't really 'missing' and I am not saying I have a memory problem. I was looking for a free App that would show me the memory used by each process whch I could use for researching iPad 'memory usage' issue and then delete and forget, not constantly check.
I thought I would find the answer here in Apple communities...

Dec 30, 2011 12:17 PM in response to Roy 27inchby ultramantis,I just wanted to let you know I found a really a good app for $.99 that shows you all the memory. I also think it is very intersting to know where all the memory goes, that is what drives innovation and the curiosity to discover we things. Plus I also was tryin to figure er out if there was a way to make pages not have a slit keyboard lag. I was trying to see if something was running in the background and using up all the memory. but the app process killer does appear to add up to 256 Nb if you are interested. It also gives you the option to kill everything. I noticed that their are two processes that appear to run constantly. They are
Music~iPad
MobileMail
Perhaps that is where your missing memory is going. I find it interesting to ow what is going on under the hood.

Perhaps you would be so kind as to share the name of the app?

Apr 22, 2012 7:13 PM in response to Roy 27inchby Ron Voss,Roy, those accusing the app of being wrong are wrong. The memory numbers reported by the app are what iOS reports to the app; all such apps report the same kind of info. Some call the missing memory "other" and Apple doesn't say what this "category" holds. Graphics frame buffers are commonly suspected, e.g., the last screen shown by each inactive app, and each iPhone 4S screen takes 2.4MB, but that doesn't come anywhere close to accounting for all the "other" memory. I don't have a clue what does.

I don't think Roy is following this topic a year and a half later...
