We have multiple computers set up through DHCP to connect to a file server running Mac Server OS 10.3.9. The server has different folders and partitions set as share points for file backup. Since there are so many share points, we all create aliases so that it's faster to connect to the folder you want.
Every so often, you click on an alias and the network window pops open for your password but it wants to connect to another computer on the network. All you can do then is RE-CREATE all your aliases (which is a big pain in the @$$).
Any clue as to what's causing this or how it might be fixed?
Connect to the network share (click on Options and have Keychain save the password) and then select Go>Computer from the menu bar. Drag the icon of the share from the Computer window to the desktop to create the alias. You can also drag the share icon from the Computer window to your Startup Items in Account Preferences to login in each time you open your account.
That's how I did it...My problem is that I could come in tomorrow and none of those aliases will work. Or they would want to hook up to another computer (besides the server)!
If you shutdown the workstations they lose their IP addresses and are assigned a new one when restarted. That's why you're losing the links to some and others connect to a different machine. I'm not quite sure how to do it but you need to have static IP addresses for it to work unless you leave them on.
You can experiment with the TCP/IP settings. There's one to "Configure IPv4: Using DHCP with manual address". Set your address here using the same sequence that the router uses. You would also need to disable DHCP in the router.
