POP3 Gmail with Mail

It suddenly stopped working...didn't change a thing.
This is the error message when I try to download new mail:
"There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “Gmail” or try again.
The server returned the error: The server “pop.gmail.com” refused to allow a connection on port 995."
All settings are as specified, and it used to work.
I use OS X 10.6.4 and Mail 4.3.
Any ideas?

I'm pretty sure google is playing DNS games to direct us to nearby servers; for me, pop.gmail.com resolves to 74.125.127.109 from my home network, and 74.125.93.109 from an online ssh server I use (both in the US). I queried a few other DNS servers around the net, and got 74.125.155.109, 72.14.213.109, and 74.125.127.109. Interestingly, I can telnet to port 993 on all of the IPs except 205.85.229.109 (which seems to be allocated to the US Navy???)... I wonder if there's some weird geographic or network-based filtering going on. SuneNJ, what DNS server are you using? Can you telnet to port 993 on any of the IPs I mentioned above?

Hello Gordon

I get the same results as you. Regardless of which DNS Server's I use - Virgin's, Google's, BT, OpenDNS etc. Google's pop.gmail.com (which is an alias for something else) still returns 209.85.227.109 though and not the address you get.

Interestingly OP has not replied yet. I'm not saying this is the case with OP but we've been on these boards long enough to know that sometimes posters are slightly confused regarding the information they provide and the results they're trying to interpret? Hence the reason they post I guess?

We'll have to wait and see what develops. Very foggy and icy where I am. I trust things are OK where you are?
