Has anyone ever done this? Would the shop vac be too powerful and mess up the inner workings of my 2008 intel iMac??? I used a regular vacuum the other day and it didn't seem to help fan noise. It's not overly loud just a dim humming that kind of fluctuates and I really want to get rid of it.
Is the machine under warranty? If it is, bring it in for service. You don't want to be messing with the innards of the machine unless it is out of warranty.
It is not under warranty. I am going to try tonight. I dont think my home vacuum has enough suction to pull the dust out to be honest. I think I will try again tonight without the attachment. Does the apple retail store do iMac cleaning? How much would it cost if they do?
My iMac makes a faint humming noise, as well.
It gets more noticeable when I've got a lot of apps going that are memory intensive --
like InDesign, Photoshop, etc.
Why don't you open up your Activity Monitor app from the Applications folder > Utilities.
It will tell you what's running when it gets louder.
The only issue is that it doesnt usually get any louder its just a constant hum from booting of the computer so I don't think the issue is any programs being too intense...
