Keyboard missing underscore

My brother was using his new iPad and he was trying to enter my email address in a field, however, my email address includes an underscore and we could not locate the underscore character. The underscore character did show when the keyboard was displayed while using Safari. Is there a way to force the display of the underscore character or can it be entered using special character codes?
