When connected to the computer I am not getting "The IPOD cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started. Proir to this I was getting the message that the IPod touch passcode needed to be used prior to hooking up to iTunes Please help!

Try here for the recognition problem
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
After you get it recognized you have to put it in recovery mode to restore it. See:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
You have to restore it to factory defaults since your daughter does not remember the password, If you restore from backup you will need the now forgotten password to use it.

Thanks for your reply. I went through both steps and thought that the recovery was working. However when the download was finished with ITunes the IPod touch is still not being recognized. The iPod is still saying "iPod is disabled" and I am getting the message on iTunes the the Apple Mobile Device service is not started. Do you have other suggestions.
