Q: Intermittent AirPrint connection with new HP D110 and iPad

So I got a brand new HP D110 with ePrint yesterday, set it up on my Time Capsule/Airport network, followed all the directions given by Apple and from this discussion board. However, the printer only shows up on my iPad or iPhone about half the time. At first it didn't show up at all, then after turning the printer on and off multiple times it shows up. I print something in safari, switch to mail (after printing completes) and then the printer disappears when I try to print.

Anyone else seeing the printer disappear half the time? My network is at full signal and everything else work great with the printer. Pretty frustrating experience and there are not any tools to figure out the problem.

    This might be purely coincidental, but I have not had any problems since changing my Belkin router config to enable UPnP. Everything seems to work fine now, with printer and scanner detection working consistently.

    Hi Andrew,

    I installed Bonjour for Windows. Restarted the Bonjour services on the printer. It was seen by the PC for approx 2 minutes, then it dissapeared. In the meanwhile the iPad did not recognized the printer at all...
    Everytime I restart the Bonjour services on the printer, it was seen for 2 minutes by the laptop, and not by the iPad.

    uPnP is also enables (both printer and router) and recognized by the PC (as reply to previous topic about uPnP enabled on a Belkin).

    All devices have the latest firmware. My printer is a HP B210a (so a bit off-topic, but still the same problem as within this post)

    Hope this gives you some idea of the issue..

    Hi Andrew,

    I did som other tests:
    - installed the HP application for printing: no succes. I will contact HP for this issue to get their view
    - installed the app Printing for IPad: printing is possible within the app
    - installed printcentral: recognized the printer on port 9100, printing possible
    - on the pc the printer was also visible on upnp
    - according to Sitecom Bonjour should workshop, but I Will give them another Call as their answer is not fully clear to me.

    Based on the results you are seeing, the router definitly is having some problems with Bonjour, and is consistent with others seeing the problem (the Printer can be seen for a couple of minutes, then it dissapears). The fact that the printer can always be discovered when not using Bonjour, but has problems being discovered when using Bonjour points squarely at the router. I would definitely pester Sitecom on that one. Note that for some routers, many people have had luck with [dd-wrt|http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index] but I don't see your router listed as supported, and using this is definitely doing so at your own risk since you are replacing the vendors firmware with an open source version.

    Bateman - Did you ever get this to work? I just got an HP 8500A and I have a Linksys router (I have the 610N) and I am only able to get Airprint to work intermittently. I really want to get this to work. Anyone have any suggestions?

    UPDATE: I connected the printer to my network via Ethernet and now my iPad sees the printer and I'm able to print via AirPrint. I assume this means that the problem lies with the router and not with either my iPad or the printer. Does that seem right? If yes, I'm wondering what I need to change on my router to get this to work. Anyone have any thoughts?

    Six months later, I still have the same problem with my iOS devices not seeing my printer.  Oddly, my Macbook struggles to print too (it takes forever to print a single page), while my Windows XP devices work flawlessly.

    I just wanted to follow up with the Apple and HP communities on my Airprint issues.

     

    I finally bit the bullet and replaced my Linksys WRT110 router with an Apple Airport Extreme. I've been running my setup for three weeks now and airprint has worked flawlessly.  I'm now pretty sure it was the router that was causing the problems, even though all devices had the latest firmwares installed and everything had been reset. 

     

    I think it's safe to say that certain routers just don't play with Bonjour the way we'd like them too.

     

    My iOS devices can now find and print to my 8500A all the time.

    Hi,

     

    I had a lot of trouble getting Airprint to work on my new HP Photosmart Plus.

    I have an iPad 2, PC with WIndows 7 and Linksys WRT110 router.

     

    Wireless printing from PC to printer was no problem from the moment I installed the printer.

    Also the iPad and printer seemed to be ok.

     

    The iPad however wasn't able to 'see' my new printer when trying to use Airprint.

     

    After spending hours and hours of reconfiguring/reinstalling/upgrading all my hardware (printer, iPad, router) and software (Windows firewall, AVG Security) and being on the phone with Apple and HP Helpdesk for hours to no avail I was advised to have the printer and iPad tested, meaning I would loose them for several days or up to a week.

     

    The day I wanted to return my printer to have it tested I stumbled upon this article:

    I downgraded the firmware of my router to the very first version, as described in the article and voila:

    right after the change my iPad could recognise my printer and printing via Airprint works all right.

     

    Somehow Airprint (Bonjour) only seems to work with the oldest version of the firmware of my router.

     

    This solution isn't pretty and far from ideal (having to use the old firmware), but it finally solved my Airprint problem.

    What WORKED for me:

     

    1 - Removed any printer jobs from the ipad`s printer center

    2 - Got in the printer`s Bonjour settings by it`s IP

    3 - Removed any symbols that the Printer`s name had like: [ ]  (left only alphanumeric chars.)

    4 - Deactivated Bonjour service

    5 - Reactivated Bonjour

    6 - Re-print

    7-  DONE

    Can you tell me if you ever got a solution to inconsistent AirPrint printing on your iPad? The post was two years ago and we have same issue with a new 2012 Epson 400.

    Just to share, I think i found the cause for my issue.

    I have a new Canon MG5450 and experienced the same issues with intermittent airprint availability. Now you see it, then you don't. Frustated the H out of me.

     

    I changed everything on my sitecom access points. But, no joy.

    Then i found that i could browse to my printer and found this setting:

     

    [Wireless LAN DRX setting];

    Specify whether Wireless LAN DRX is to be enabled or disabled.

    When this setting is enabled, wireless LAN will be in sleep mode during intervals between signals from the access point, thus reducing power consumption.

     

    It made sense, because when i rebooted the printer it usually showed up to disappear after a short while.

    I switched DRX off and et voila, problem solved. All ipads and iphones are now seeing the printer, and it doesn't disappear anymore.

     

    So, try to find out if there is this kind of wlan functionality and turn it off.
