How can I make a foreign phone number format stick?

As I enter a phone number in Tokyo, it is of the format (03) 1234-5678.
But, when I save the entry in Address Book, it turns into 031-234-5678.

It is driving me crazy. I have tried 03-1234-5678 and other ways. But, whatever I enter gets saved in the xxx-xxx-xxxx format.

Help!!

Always include the country code and that should fix it: +81-03-1234-5678

As an added bonus, once you sync that number to a phone, it should magically work from wherever you happen to be.

It's easy to change to format using Preferences in Address Book. I've changed mine to suit Australia and it automatically puts new numbers from both the Mac and the iphone in the right format. But it sounds like you might want to have 2 different formats - presumably you're from the USA and want the US format as well. I think that might be possible still using Preferences as it does allow you to save multiple formats. Just go to Address book, select Preferences, then Phone and create the format you want. Alternatively you can choose to untick the automatic formatting and then whatever you enter in whichever country remains that way.

Hi Profinite

I'm sorry I don't have an answer as to why the iPhone contacts shows up differently to the MobileMe contacts - mine seems to follow the MobileMe contacts format. I can't find a preference in the iPhone that seems to change that. The only thing I can think of is whether for some reason it hasn't detected the change, so maybe worth ensuring it's correct on your Mac and syncing again?

By the way, you mentioned that you saved 2 formats for the same phone number XX XXXX XXXX and XXXX XXXX. You don't need to save those as 2 different ones. In Australia we use the same format and if I enter 01 2345 6789, then when I am in the local area, it will automatically call just 2345 6789, and if I'm outside of the area it will call 01 2345 6789, so you only need to enter the latter.

One issue has arisen. While the +81-3-1234-5678 format saves as is and it is retained on the iPhone as +81 3 1234 5678 without the dashes, I do need an entry in the 1234-5678 format because, when in Tokyo, one needs to dial 1234-5678.

The 1234-5678, however, shows up as (123) 456-78 on the iPhone, which is totally in a wrong format.

How can I make 1234-5678 show up as is on the iPhone?

Maybe you should wait and try it in Tokyo. It just might work. The cell networks are different from landlines. Here in North America, I can always dial +1 on a cell phone and it will figure everything out for me. On my land land, the majority of the time I dial 1 when I don't need to and, instead of just connecting me, the recording lectures me about how stupid I am and makes me dial again, this time with just the area code and no country code.

nextdoor - In Address Book, if I go to Preferences > Phone and create a Custom Format, how do I then apply the Custom Format to a specific phone number?

I will give you an example:
[1] I need to enter the same phone number in Tokyo in two different formats for the same person.
[2] One format is ####-#### and the other is ##-####-####.
[3] So, I created both formats as custom formats.
[4] Now, I typed 1234-5678 and 03-1234-5678.
[5] 1234-5678 saves as it. But, 03-1234-5678 saves as 031-234-5678, which is wrong.

Thanks again, nextdoor, for trying to help me.

It is encouraging to know that, in your case, the format you use in Address Book is preserved through MobileMe onto your iPhone. If I make a small change in Address Book, then the change does show up on the iPhone. So, Address Book and Contacts are syncing through MobileMe. Also, as I stated above, in Address Book I now have +Automatically format phone numbers+ unchecked.

And, thanks for the tip on saving a phone number in only one format 01 2345 6789. Your story makes sense, and that's what most likely happens in Japan as well.

When I travel to Tokyo, upon landing in Narita I immediately rent a 3G cell phone. Then, I yank the SIM out and put it in my iPhone. That's when I need to see these phone numbers in a correct format. (Though it has nothing to do with this thread, they no longer rent a SIM for iPhone.)
