Can't update iPhone through iTunes

Odd development. I want to update my iPhone 3GS to 4.2 as I'm running 4.1. I go to iTunes, click on my phone icon, see that it says that there is a new update for iPhone and to click "update" to download. I click the button and after a few seconds I get the error message "You currently have the latest version of iTunes". I've unplugged and tried this several times, and I always get the same error. The update button I'm clicking is directly beside the message saying there is new software to download.

Any ideas? This has never happened before.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Do you have the LATEST version of iTunes - 10.1?

I'm having exactly the same problem. I have itunes 9.2 and itunes tells me that is the current version. That is exactly the message that comes up.
'This version of iTunes (9.2) is the current version'
It's like it's not reading the Iphone at all.

Hello Michael James1, iOS 4.2 requires iTunes 10.1 which requires Mac OS X (10.5.8) minimum.

That would explain everything. It seems so much of my problems with several programs is a result of still running 10.4.11. Any idea how I can upgrade to the rest of the Mac world? I see all kinds of upgrades to Snow Leopard, but it says it is an upgrade from 10.5, which I don't have and can't find a place to buy.

Glad to help. You may want to go to a
Mac OS X 10.6.x upgrade thread. Since
MacBook has an Intel CPU they can go
straight to Snow Leopard. Cost about
$29 US. Max out your RAM. Also look at
MacBook threads and iTunes threads.
iTunes 10.1 required for iOS 4.2.x

I would like to "UNANSWER" this post because I have the latest iTunes (10.1) running on a 3.06 Ghz iMac running 10.6.5 and when I hook up my 3GS phone (which shows it to have Version 3.1.3 (7E18)), and iTunes will say I have the latest version. What is going on? Any advice on what to do?

The phone is acting buggy.

Hello Dave@Streets, this is a forum link for purchase info: macjack post.
It is best to look and search in other catagories such as Mac OS X 10.4, Mac OS X 10.5 or PowerMac.
Select the +more options+ above Logout after choosing the catagory you want to search. I have a PowerPC CPU also so I too can only go to Mac OS X 10.5. From what I have gathered so far: Max out your RAM, Back-up to an external firewire HD, and check requirements for iTunes 10 and Mac OS X 10.5 for your system.

First, start your own thread; "Answered" threads are skipped by most forum members.

Next, I just read in another thread that there is an update that affects iTunes connectivity. I don't know if this is the same problem, but running System Update can't hurt.

i ran a System Update to make sure everything was up to date, still no luck.
