Fundraising In Numbers'09

I've been organizing a fundraiser for a group at my school and I wanted to put the progress online for everyone to see. I have an entire table set up showing who has raised what but what I really want to include is a fundraising thermometer graph or something similar. Does anyone know if this is possible in the 2009 version of Numbers? I'd also like to find a way for it to update automatically every time I put in more money on my chart but if thats not possible then changing it manually is just as good.
Any suggestions on how I can do this?

Thanks

Hi dj,

Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Numbers '09 forum.

The chart in Numbers will update automatically, but you'll have to change the copy on the website manually, unless Yvan or someone else has an idea for a script that would automate the process of replacing the old thermometer with the new one.

The chart itself is a simple bar graph, charting the single value in column B of the source table, and using the contents of A2 (a cell in a header column) as the Category Label. The category label is moved from its usual position below the chart, and must be manually moved each time the chart is updated.

The chart is formatted with the Y axis maximum set at the fundraising goal, and the number of steps set to provide round numbers for the Y axis labels. It is set to show neither legend nor a title. the colour of the bar is set to red, and the fill of the chart itself is set to transparent.

Two shapes are added: a red-filled circle to provide the thermometer's bulb, and a white filled rounded rectangle to act as the tube. Because I used a black stroke to outline both shapes, both shapes are placed behind the chart to hide the top of the circle and the rounded bottom of the rectangle behind the red bar. The rest of the two shapes shows through the transparent fill of the chart background.

Formulas:
You will need a formula in B2 to collect the current total from wherever it is calculated.
A2 contains a formula which concatenates today's date, a text string consisting of an option-return followed by a $ sign, and the value in B2. The easiest way to construct it is probably to either type or copy and paste the formula below, then click between the first double quote and the $ sign and press option-return. The first part of the formula will immediately disappear from sight, but is still there. Click Accept (or the green check mark) to confirm the formula and see the (two line) result.

=TODAY()&"$"&B2

Barry

Hello Barry

I know absolutely nothing about Wed design.
Imagine : I didn't made a Web site about my workshop products.
So, to be helpful, it would be necessary to have infos about the way the OP replace a version of the thermometer by an other one by hand.

True, but I'm no expert in that respect either. The Numbers part of the solution is to create the thermometer, then create an image file from that (the easiest method is likely use a screen shot using shift-command-4 to produce a .png file).

Getting the image from the user's hard drive to the web page will depend on at least two factors external to Numbers:
- where the web page images are stored, and getting the file to that location.
- the application being used to create the web page if editing of the actual page is required.

Barry
