iphone 3g map unusable due to location service. 4.2.1

Even though 4.2.1 did help increase my phone speed in some areas, my maps became unusable over the 3G network. I turned off the location service for my maps and that solved the problem. Wishfully hoping that they fix this in the next update.

Anyone else have this problem?

I am having the same problem. That does not fix it. If you let it sit long enough it will start working. When I open maps it is almost 2 minutes before I can even type anything in it. Why does Apple disable the ability to downgrade? I think this is riduculous, and they are just making the iPhone 3g un-useable so we will purchase 4g...

Yep, having the same issue. Any ap that uses Location Services (including the camera) takes forever to load (sometimes up to 5 minutes) is slow to respond and leaves my phone slow for at least five minutes after exiting. It's beyond frustrating - I travel for my job and count on the maps application to get me from place to place. It runs 'normal' speed when Location Services is turned off, but eliminates a huge portion of the functionality. I'm wondering if the addition of the 'compass' is the cause of this? would be nice to be able to turn off that function independently to find out.

Have the same problem as described here by others. EXTREMELY frustrating; Maps is totally unusable on my iPhone 3G with v4.2.1. It was also similarly un-usable in 4.2. I tried the suggestions of "RollinAbes", but it had no discernible effect for me.

When I go into Maps and then type in the "Search" or "Start/End" boxes the keyboard is totally unresponsive. I've been staring at the letter "T" popped up and frozen for the last several minutes.

C'mon Apple, you guys not hearing these complaints? Or what? How many thousands of others likely have the same issue and just haven't found the correct forum to document it and complain about it...?!

Same problem here. My 3G is unusable for anything gps related. Is a shame. What I don't understand is "why" apple won't let us downgrade the iOS back to v. 3 ?? If not then give us a fix for a unusable iPhone with v. 4 installed. I am a salesman and I rely on the maps a lot. I can't use it now. I wanted to use GPS Drive (it work slow on v.3. But is totally unusable on v. 4 on the 3G. Seems the fixes stated so far are not the answer.
I can't afford a new iPhone4 yet.

I merely want to add my frustration at my 3G's maps virtually unusable on 4.2.1. I don't want to waste time looking for fixes - I just want Apple to sort it out and stop creating problems for iPhone users, especially those of us with a 3G. I wasted enough time with the release of 4.0.2 which made my phone so slow I couldn't use many of the apps including basic SMS services. Now that's been fixed, the location services are literally a waste of time, with maps taking up to 2 minutes to load, no good if you're in a hurry. It's infuriating really, especially as the phone itself was overpriced costing several hundred pounds and has been wrecked by Apple themselves. I'll be buying an Android phone next thanks Apple.

4.2.1 has also made my phone an unusable brick for about 2 minutes every time any application attempts to use location services. This includes Facebook, the native Google Maps app, and even the camera. The phone becomes completely unresponsive, and often crashes. To maintain some semblance of functionality, I have disabled location services in almost all of my apps.

But this is clearly garbage. Screwing up native apps with a firmware upgrade is one thing (even though Maps is one of my most-used features), but when you reduce the functionality of my paid third-party apps, that's another entirely.

Fix this.

I am having the same problem. No new input or solution, but posting because I believe it's important that apple be aware of the extent of the frustration, and be accountable for making it right.

I have a 3Gs, in CT. Same problem on ATT or wifi. Phone becomes completely unresponsive as soon as the first letter is typed in the maps application search field. Sometimes after one or two minutes it will unfreeze allowing me to type the next letter but then immediately freezes again. The only solution then is to do a hard restart, though this only unfreezes the phon and does not fix the core issue.

I would agree with others that I'm tired of searching for fixes to recurring problems caused by the software upgrades. If Apple's intention is to make a product that has a two year lifespan, then I think they should be more transparent about it. Otherwise, they should make it right to their customers.

I'd be happy if someone from Apple started by acknowledging the problem, with some insight into plans for a fix. If no technical fix is available, then my expectation would be for a credit toward an upgrade. Anything less is bad business.

I DL'd the new version (8.0) of GPS Drive and it seems to work better, still not right, but better. When I run it it seems to lock up but if I wait it will finally get the gps signal. Only problem is it doesn't hold, after a couple mins it loses gps and will intermittently get it back.
Still overall a huge problem with GPS in iPhone 3G.
Maybe soon I'll be able to afford a new iPhone 4, it seems that will be the only way I'll be able to use GPS in my iPhone. 🙂

Just adding in that I am relieved it's not just me. Really hoping Apple comes up with a solution. So very frustrating that the phone becomes unusable for periods of time...I hear the Android doesn't 🙂

You might want to read some Android forums before being sure. At least the iPhone doesn't sent text messages to the wrong phone - http://tech.slashdot.org/story/11/01/01/2010257/Android-Text-Messages-Intermitte ntly-Going-Astray?from=headlines

I have also been having this same problem, using an iPhone 3G on Rogers Wireless in Canada. Since updating to 4.2.1, any app using location services renders the phone unusable. The built-in maps app will freeze up as described by other users. My GPS app (Motion X) and the Geocaching apps are also affected, they are unable to pick up a reliable GPS location or update my location when I move, so Geocaching is pretty much impossible. Even using location services in apps like Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook, Flixster, etc can be unreliable. In researching this problem I see that people using other apps that track running distance, etc, are encountering problems as well.

I tried the fix suggested on Page 1 of this thread but it was not effective.

Apple really needs to get this fixed, there are a lot of 3G users out there, and may of us, like myself, use maps and other GPS based apps on a very regular basis.

Dexter...
