Audio and video out of sync when playing purchased and rented movies

Was working fine on the netbook I own for months and months.

I'm running iTunes 10.1.0.56 and not there's the sync problem and it's just generally choppy playback as well.

I've tried all the tricks recommended here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1386

I've also tried playing the movies in Quick Time, the sync problem is slightly better, but still not in sync and also choppy.

Please, someone, help me out with this. It's maddening to not be able to play movies I paid good money for, and since I can't play the .m4v files with another player, I'm stuck. What's worse, I just bought my first HD TV and an HDMI cable and was hoping to play my movies in 42 inches of screen.

Wow. The silence is deafening.

I've now spent hours working with an Apple technician, and still the problem persists. We tried:\

- defragging
- checking for and found no duplicate installations of iTunes or Quick Time
- reinstalling Quick Time (although I'd done that once already)
- transfered one of my movies to my iPod Touch to see if the audio and video sync problem occurred when played on the Touch, and it played fine on the Touch, suggesting that the file is not corrupt
- the Apple tech had to resort to suggesting that I download and use Winamp, but Winamp wouldn't play the .M4V files and resulted in Runtime errors when I tried

it's not you. i (and others) started having the problem when itunes went to 10.1. both the .54 and .56 versions do it. you can go back to 10.0 and it should work properly (i did and it did). unless you have bumped your iPhone to 4.2 (which i did), and that requires itunes 10.1.

see these:

i can play my purchased movies via quicktime, which works sort of ok. i'm hoping a 10.2 comes soon. no way they don't know about this problem.

Wow, finally a response. Thanks SO much for taking the time to reply.

I have updated to 4.2 on my iPod Touch, and after reading the instructions I've found for downgrading to iTunes 10, I really don't want to go through all the hassle of messing the library.

As for your comment about there being no way that Apple doesn't know about the sync issues, they might, but then, as I said above, I spent hours working with an Apple tech on the phone and via email trying to fix this, and he was unaware of other users having this problem.

I'll check out those other threads now. Thanks again.

well, about that.

i am an apple fan, in general, but i think that their frontline support folks are geared to support the obvious issues. like "i didn't install iTunes" and big stupid stuff like that. i had an issue about a year ago where i could watch purchased movies just fine, but couldn't watch anything i rented. i spent a lot of effort working with several support folks and never got anywhere. the first response to pretty much any issue you ever have is "uninstall, reinstall, try again." which almost never works.

in the end, an update to iTunes came out and my problem with not being able to play rented movies went away. i changed nothing on my end. they obviously fixed the problem.

so there is hope...at least i hope so, because i've got a boatload of purchased movies sitting on my computer that i can't watch via iTunes at the moment.

btw, going backward to 10.0 was easier than it sounds. but since you've gone to 4.2 on your touch, as i did on my iPhone, you're basically hosed...

I'm having the same trouble with a MacBook Pro. I'm running iTunes 10.1.1 on OS X 10.6.5. The audio and video are out of sync by about 30 frames.

Also, I thought this was just me at first, I am noticing a similar lag when pressing "pause" in iTunes when playing music. The application doesn't responde immediately. There's a delay.

This is very, very frustrating.
