Mac OSX Cat Names

This timeless discussion is warranted a new look with the announcement of the new names coming out. According to History of Mac OS on Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historyof_MacOS) the Mac OSX Cat Names are as follows:
Mac OS 10 (Cheetah)
Mac OS 10.1 (Puma)
Mac OS 10.2 (Jaguar)
Mac OS 10.3 (Panther)
Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger)
Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard)
Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Mac OS 10.7 (Lion)
Mac OS 10.8 (Liger)

First of all, Liger? Are they being serious? In my opinion Liger's do not count, as they're a manmade genetic construction like hybrid fruit and don't exist in nature. I even thought Snow Leopard was weak coming out right after Leopard. What happened to the Bobcat, Ocelot, Caracal Cat, Jaguarundi, Marbled Cat, and most importantly (my favorite) the Lynx. I vote Lynx for 10.9.

OS X 10.7 (Lion) is already announced here:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/lion/

Since 10.7 hasn't yet been released, I seriously doubt the claim of 10.8 being "Liger" has any substantial evidence backing it. Probably just some contributor trying to be funny and seeing how long it would take for someone to notice.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Edit: How about "Cougar" for one of the next few? Granted, a Cougar is the same species as a Puma or Jaguar, but that hasn't stopped Apple from repeating the idea in the past (Puma and Panther). I like the Lynx idea the best though.

I just realized why "Lynx" was dropped: it is too close to "Linux"

The scientific name for the Bobcat is "Lynx rufus"
(source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felidae )

And the Snow Leopard is the sole occupant of the Genus "Uncia" being named "Uncia uncia"

Oh, the Domestic Cat is listed as "Felis catus" and it turns out that "Tabby" is not a breed but refers to a coat pattern that is in many breeds. Perhaps there could be an OS "Felis catus" with a "Tabby" theme?

Maybe they plan to abandon the decimal numbering system and go to "MacOS 11" or "MacOS XI". That numbering system would work well until they got to "MacOS XXX". Projecting into the future, that would, coincidentally, happen around the year 2038 - the real "Year 2K" for computers.

There is no such thing as a "Bandersnatch" in reality, and I don't even know what a catamount is. Indeed I don't think Tiglon should count either. I guess it makes sense that Lynx sounds similar to Linux, but they could still use things like Bobcat and Ocelot. Yeah I wonder what their new theme will be for OS 11, or will they just keep going? 10.10, 10.11, 10.12? I hope not, after 10.9 I hope they move on to 11. To the guy who questioned the validity of 10.8 being Liger, you might be right but there were sources listed on the page, I didn't check them out myself though. If you find further information on that let us know. There also wasn't any article for 10.8 to support it, like there was for 10.7.

Etresoft, I don't think it will take only 28 years to reach Mac OS 30. There's no way to tell the amount of years for sure, but if they keep the pattern of getting to .9 then going up 1 that's 193 to go. (including 10.7 Lion)

I'd like to remind the last few posters that the pattern here is types of cats, not specific cats or obscene references to cats.

Moorgan, I'd suspect that most everyone would be aware of that; however - no disrespect intended - there is such a thing as tongue-in-cheek, aka humor and some of us like to engage in that occasionally. 😉
