3GS upgrade to OS 4.2.1, no service with 3GS turned on

Hi,
yesterday i upgraded my iphone 3GS to OS 4.2.1. Fortunately, unlike previous upgrades, everything went smoothly and after about half an hour the phone was running the new OS.

However, today i noticed i had no signal - just "No Service" at the top-left.
After a quick look on google i found someone mentioning having 3G turned on affected them, so i tried turning 3G off.

Sure enough, after a minute or so my signal came back and i have a full 5 bars on Vodafone UK. However, whenever i go and turn on 3G the signal drops to 1 bar for a few seconds before then going to "No Service".

Also, the phone does feel slightly warmer to the touch than it should.
Is this a general problem for other 3GS users in the UK, or am i unique?

Is there anything i can do, other than trying to revert to an earlier version? I really dont want to do that as i've had updates brick the phone before and i dont want to have to go through recovery mode again 😟

You don't have to go to an earlier version. If it is related to a software bug you can restore the phone and see if that works. If it doesn't then it is probably unrelated to the software update. Call Vodafone and make sure that your account is still provisioned correctly. Carriers can have issues if their database starts reporting that you don't have 3G data when in fact you do. You can try that as well
