Can iMac be easily moved to different rooms - convenient ?

I have not been to an Apple store yet, but just curious ---

Does anyone take their Imac around the house as in a laptop ?
I like the idea that all is built into the display so I can take the display, wireless keyboard and mouse and go sit in another room if I wish. What do you think --- anybody take their 17" around the house to work in different rooms ? how it is ?

Bob,

We have an iMac iSight and an eMac at home (along with a few others) and believe me, it is downright easy to lug an iMac to another room.

Maybe not the best idea to do it all the time, but if you just want to switch rooms (or need more space like a kitchen table), it can be done easily enough.

I recommend using an AirPort Extreme for connecting wirelessly to the net. It also allows you to plug your printer into the AirPort for wireless network printing. This makes things a lot easier. Move the iMac (one power cord) and grab the keyboard & mouse, not hard at all.

Good luck,

I have to agree with Max and Scott, moving the iMac is somewhere between moving a laptop and a CRT based computer. I have a 20" iMac iSight (VERY happy with it) that normally sits on my wife's desk in her office. When company comes over I move it to the living room to show pictures, play audio through the larger speakers and generally show it off. Now that it's Christmas, we turn it towards the tree for a nice background while doing video conferencing. We're seriously thinking of getting another just to do living room duty.

As for convenience, we have the 20" and it really isn't a hassle to move it. It's always been on the wireless network so the only cables are the power, keyboard and (in the office) printer. I keep an extra power cable in the living room. The process: unplug the power/keyboard/mouse, put the remote in my pocket, move the keyboard/mouse to the living room, carry the iMac to the living room (very easy compared to our eMac), plug it in and turn it on. With front row it's a shame not to use it where there's comfortable seating and a good audio system. I'm thinking of just putting an extra keyboard/mouse in the living room to cut down a trip. What I REALLY want is an iMac in the living room full time.

Having had lots of Macs since 1984, I think this is the best one I've every had. Great value and excellent quality.

Rudy,
Having only moved it once so far, it was popular in the Lounge. I think I'll wait some time before suggesting a second one! Agree that this is a great Mac but I still have the 1.8 SP G5 PM. Doing my best to keep the iMac clean, with all my messing about on the PM. For example, scanning old pictures into PM then importing the finished articles to the iMac. I hit one problem. The iMac screen is so bright, it highlighted various defects on my old pictures. I am now in the process of re-scanning at higher resolution and fixing defects. When I say old, I am talking about 35mm colour slides from 1956 onwards plus some even older B&W prints, a few of the latter from the 1920s onwards 😉
