My iPhone shows that I have two updates for two different apps. When I go to login to my account, it backs out to the main screen where it usually shows me getting the updates and there is the progress bar on the apps that never fills. After a few moments, I get a message that reads "Cannot connect to iTunes store." I can, however, connect to iTunes store and make purchases.

Anyone got any ideas?

This issue has been reported before. There is a long thread in the iTunes forum about this. Read through this thread to see if you have any of the apps mentioned. Deleting them in iTunes followed by moving all files to trash seems to have fixed things for most users:
