Q: MacBook Pro Logic Board Failure

I was using my computer just fine (2007 MBP core 2 duo) all day. Put it to sleep came back after 30 minutes and tried to wake it and it's dead. I held down the power key to shut it down then tried to restart no luck. No start up chime, no screen, keyboard seems dead as well (caps lock light does not light up), HD does not start up. The only signs of life are the white light on the screen latch that is now on, the fans are spinning and the DVD drive seems to work.

Reset the power management module and zapped the PRAM, no luck.

I started having problems on both my Macbook and iMac after upgrade to

    10.9 Mavericks.

My Macbook is in for repair under Apple Care ... they say the logic board

needs replacing even though I thought it was the hard drive problem.

Now my iMac onto which I made a back up of the Macbook has failed.

I just shut the iMac down fully then I unplugged it from the surge protector.
I plugged it back in the surge protector and now it won't power on.

I makes no sense... the only common thing is Mavericks as I upgraded them

    both.

I don't know a lot about computer hardware so I will take your word for it. For now, the special tape solution seems to have worked - pointing to RAM moving around as the problem. Your take?

Well I don't want to open anything yet until I can see if I can get

Apple or the reseller to take responsibility for fixing something.

Until then, maybe after that, I may open the iMac and see what

can be done. It really makes no sense at all just shutting the machine

down properly and for it to not come on is very puzzling and

    very disappointing.

I am very upset as now I have to type to you from Windows computers.

I had been faithfully using my Macs and now both have failed back to back

    2 days in a row.

I am lost for words now my disgust!

Whenever I get my Macbook back as it is under repair, I will make sure to

look at the serial number (the original one and if it changes if the logic board

is replaced). I was just going by what others were saying here. I am not sure.

I would think the same serial number that was on the Macbook should apply.

But if another logic board is installed, does that mean a new serial number is

given? How do I find out as I would have to open the computer to see?

I don't want to be involved with fraud with my Macbook if (and at the hands of Apple)

    Apple will use the

same serial number or not upon its repair?? so I am and will be concerned

about this serial number issue and match up.

I will be watching and reporting to the necessary bureaus if necessary.

Your SN seen on "About this Mac" must match with the back cover, also must match with the SN in the service papers... thats all

well someone threw it out there that there may be a serial number discrepancy

I have no idea but I will be watching it carefully and any mistake Apple makes

will be reported to whomever! Apple should consult its legal department
(as I know I may do so).

    currterr-

Your veiled threats to sue Apple, posted here, are laughable. You need to do more research before making such threats.

    1) A good litigation attorney's hourly rates will chew up the cost of a New MacBook in less than half a day's work. It will take many weeks to prepare a believable case for trial. That cannot possibly be worth the amount of money you will end up paying if you have to follow through.

Because the threat of suit is not credible, threatening to sue makes you seem like an irrational radical to be ignored, not a dis-satisfied customer that needs attention.

    2) Readers here are other Users like you. Apple Inc. makes no promise to read these posts, and NEVER replies here unless you quuery goes complety unanswered after several days.

If you want to contact Apple in any meaningful way, use the feedback pages. Being completely businesslike and professional add credibility to your statements.

And meanwhile as I type this on my Windows computer on a Sony built in 2009 that still works

(note I typed the other comments on a Dell Windows computer built in 2010)

unlike 2 Apple computers of recent years (mid/late 2011), the suggestion was to consult...

no one made any threats.  you are reading too much into this.  But there is some issue

if there are discrepancies in the serial numbers that I did not bring up, but others did

and this is something that can be reported to the better business bureau

(getting a different computer than what was purchased when the expectation is to

    get back the same computer).

Complaining here will achieve nothing, make your complaint to Apple.

That is not a threat.  If a threat was made, it should be reported to the police.

And I would be the first to do so.

Threatening to sue is not a criminal offence, why would the police be involved?

Are you sure that you thought this through?

If you intend to sue then there is no need to go on about it here, just do it.

You know what, YOU PEOPLE are frightening me.

I am disabled and I have paranoia and suffer from depression.

Now I feel I am being threatened by your comments.

I need to end this conversation as I do not feel comfortable

as you are talking about crimes (I am not sure if violent or what)

or something I have no idea

what you mean. I need to consult my shrink now.

Anyway, I talked to Apple and we may work something out.

I pointed out Apple's reputation is on the line...

I have windows computers that are outlasting Macs

Well I have had enough of you. Thank you for , nothing.

    Ciao!

    Good luck

I appreciate your taking enough interest to add to complaints here but this might be undermining the rest of our posts (complaints about logic board). Apple does monitor threads with a lot of activity, and your posts (in my opinion) are not helping the cause. Like someone else said, if you want to sue, just do it. We would all appreciate it!

ps: just so I don't come off as a jerk, I posted this before the author's very last post.
