Q: MacBook Pro Logic Board Failure

I was using my computer just fine (2007 MBP core 2 duo) all day. Put it to sleep came back after 30 minutes and tried to wake it and it's dead. I held down the power key to shut it down then tried to restart no luck. No start up chime, no screen, keyboard seems dead as well (caps lock light does not light up), HD does not start up. The only signs of life are the white light on the screen latch that is now on, the fans are spinning and the DVD drive seems to work.

Reset the power management module and zapped the PRAM, no luck.

Seriously, i don't think it should even be censored.  I think there are quite a number of mbp users who feel quite frustrated over this logic board failure issue.  In fact, only the graphics card need to be replaced and if by doing so, the cost will be much lower!  But the matter of fact is that, it should be a free replacement regardless of the condition of the logic board!  It just appear to me that this logic board failure is going to happen, just a matter of time.  My Powerbook G4 is still working!!! This logic board failure is not a small problem; it is a common problem for this batch of mbp.  Probably, there is just no way to channel such feedback to the correct authority in Apple that the coverage should not just be 4 years from date of purchase.  My 2gb iPod nano (1st gen) was replaced recently under the replacement programme.  And i got a brand new 8gb iPod nano.  Maybe it is not too expensive to replace iPod nano compared to logic board.

Another one bites the dust. Same exact issue. Seriously, why don't they just do a recall. This is a drop in the bucket for them. They'd probably get more business long term.

The Graphic card is SOLDERED to the Logic board. Apple does not do partial replacement of components that are Soldered to the LB.

what is very bad from apples side is

they know about this issue since the beginning and do nothing to solve it

if it was a hidden defect they would have to take care of it by law even after the warranty is over

i dont get this at all, how on earth can apple fix one guyss mac and not others, there is a post here in the last page i think that the person says Apple fixed their 07 macbook pro, logic board failure, yet someone else says Apple wont repair their 07 Macbook pro, it wont be handy to gather case numbers here, i plan on going to a genius bar in a couple of weeks. i would like some sort of evidence.

Same issue:  Early 2008 MBP, nvidia failure, 2 months past the 4-year coverage.  As pointed out above, the graphics circuitry is built in to the logic board, which is why the entire board, not just the video "card" needs replacement.

Local authorized Mac repair confirmed the nvidia code.  Apple told them coverage was expired.  I called Apple directly, same answer.  No exceptions.  Then I read these comments and decided to email Tim Cook.

Emailed Monday, got a call from Customer Relations (US) yesterday.  Bottom line, no free repair.  Why are some owners apparently able to get repairs after the deadline?  "People aren't always truthful on the Internet, sir."  Any compensation at all?  Discounts?  Vouchers?  Apple Store credit?  "I'm afraid not, sir."

Even so, I urge anyone afflicted by this to email Tim Cook.  And since all references to other means of monetary relief are shamefully censored by the moderators of this discussion, I'll not mention them.  However, in this as in so many aspects, Google is your friend.  We are far from alone.

I know that the graphics card is soldered to the logic board.  Apple can replace the whole logic board, but Apple should just charge the cost of replacing the graphics card.

Apple Does Not do that. They never have and they never will. you can send your board to an outside service company that will replace or reflow (whatever that really means) the GPU but Apple does not do that.

And that, Shootist, is the problem.  If you've read this thread - they've gone out of their way to misdiagnose GPU issues and get people to replace their entre logic boards at the customer's expense.  We know they don't do it - your point is lost on me - you're just restating the issue.

What does <edited by host> mean in Stent Muttons post above?

I'm glad that you understood what all of us here are driving at.  just to side track, to give an example of another Apple product that has defects and took quite long before Apple recognise the problem. http://timecapsuledead.org

Any chance you could repost Tim Cook's email - i think they've edited it out. Might see it quickly before they delete it!

it's all about money - money is where humanity fails

I would not complain if there was a little handling fee

but I paid the useless apple dealer in alabama already a U$50.- fee for doing nothing

then my 13 months old MBP still had to be sent to apple where I nearly paid U$500.-

for this money I could have bought a new toshiba laptop

$500? They're asking me $310 for the mbp replacement w/ a 90 day warranty, which doesn't sound very assuring.

Who is - Apple?  Sorry I didn't see your other posts - if Apple are doing this to replace a logic board on an NVidia effeted MBP frpm 2008 era, then that's the best offer I 've seen.  I wouldn't complain nearly so much as I am having seen 2 people on the trot being told it's cost nearer $1000.00 dollars after a denial of GPU issues and then to add insult to injury - the same genius tried to sell us both new MBPs for nearer $2,500.00 (thing being more expensive in the UK).
