Q: MacBook Pro Logic Board Failure

I was using my computer just fine (2007 MBP core 2 duo) all day. Put it to sleep came back after 30 minutes and tried to wake it and it's dead. I held down the power key to shut it down then tried to restart no luck. No start up chime, no screen, keyboard seems dead as well (caps lock light does not light up), HD does not start up. The only signs of life are the white light on the screen latch that is now on, the fans are spinning and the DVD drive seems to work.

Reset the power management module and zapped the PRAM, no luck.

It's overheating because of the logic board issue. Mine was doing the same before it completely failed. Take it to an apple store and have them do a nvidia test on it.

Mine lives permenantly on a cooling stand now - not too noisy and I can always unplug briefly if I need silence - it's a worthwhile investment, because, yes, these things get hot.

It's hot because of the design, not because of the logic board

I have constructed a stand for my mbp which can hold two ice packs. The mbp sits a centimetre above the ice packs and stays cool. I have just bought a mb air which stays very cool no matter if its been running all day.

Can they or can't they do a test on the video chip if the machine doesn't post? I've been told yes on the phone but, when I get there, they said no. They should at the very least offer an upgrade to a new machine.

Wow, guess I'll try this again without my rants.

Just got back from a different apple store. This time, apple dude says my machine is not affected because it doesn't post. He determines that my serial numbers came after they fixed the problem. He says affected machine will post but no video. Is there any truth in this. I'm leaning towards no.

Hi. My mid 2011 MBP 13" died after the Mountain Lion Update 1 (14 month old machine). Had shut it down after a full day of work. Won't power up again. Had small issues after Mountain Lion, but the update completely killed it.

Took it to a service station in Mumbai India - was told that the Logic Board has failed. Thought this was one off. But looks like its a full recall level issue. Can't get it repaired - too costly.

    Any advce

Yours is not one of the MBPs effected - if you read through the thread you'll see there's a specific batch from a few years back.  This thread is specific for those MBPs.

I had the same issue and took my mac to one the "geniuses" while it was still under apple care, after trying to do all the typical resets on the computer the guy eventually admitted it was a known problem with the logic board and had it sent out to hae the logic board replaced. The funny thing ia that it was a "known problem" which wouldn't have taken care of if I didn't have apple care.

After installing Mountain Lion, the video card fried on my 2007 MBP.  What I find very disturbing here is:

         1. Apple had a recall on the affected products but did not bother to contact any of the product owners, telling them that there was a (potential) problem!  I don't even think that recall/product liability law allows for a recall to happen without customer notification.

         2. Apple knows that installing Mountain Lion on these machines is a "straw" that will break the feeble "back" of the Nvida card and cause it to fail.  So why wasn't I told that before I listened to the hype and installed the new OSX?

So aside from the obvious poor customer service shown by Apple in refusing to stand behind their customers with a product defect, they have failed to notify their customers of the recall and compounded the problem by withholding the fact that the new OSX upgrade will cause currently-functioning defective cards to finally fail.

This is weak, and not what Apple used to stand for.

No matter what one purchases there is a principle that is carved in stone.

A business exists to make a profit and to incidentally render a service.

    Yep,

Just had my Nvidia card die at 4 years and 2 months. And of course Apple says no they won't replace for free (which they should). The Apple senior advisor I talked to on the phone was useless. Just kept saying "I'm really sorry for you but we're not going to repair it for free." Thanks for patronizing and screwing me at the same time.

The best I could do was go to the Apple Store where I bought it and convince the Manager to split the cost for repair so I'm paying about $320 (which is pretty much the same as flat rate repair).

Not that I think I'm lucky for paying that price. Apple needs to step up, do the right thing and cover the full cost of repair. I will be writing to corporate (with little expectation that they will care.)

I manage Mac Labs at a university and have used Macs all my career and I can see things are changing with Apple. But what should we expect when Apple now makes the vast majority of their profit from iPhone/iPad. Just look at what they did with Final Cut X. (we're switching over all of our video edit machines to Premiere Pro.) Maybe we'll all end up using PC's for work and iphones/iPads for our "lifestyles". Sigh...

all these issues have to be posted on neutral web sites

I would have not bought a MBP

unfortunately all product reviews are fake

    apple has no backbone

their silence results from low profile management

    apple operates these web sites

so frustrated customers can let off steam (anger)

imagine a genius bar employee gets attacked one of these days
