Q: MacBook Pro Logic Board Failure

maybe so but i doubt it will be significant, better to have the fans ramped up and keeping the gpu cool than have them at apples default which will just result in a quicker failure. i will take that risk thanks

I am aware that smc is software and free. I just thought others might wish to use it if they did not know about it. I suppose I should have used "installed" instead of "fitted".

I did not try the 6 year rule as it might prove a little tricky. I bought the MBP from MacConnection and had it shipped to Alaska. Apple know all that from the serial number.

Interesting that Covent Garden is replacing them for free - I believe one or two have had the same result as yourself there. Unfortunately, I am a little north of Covent Garden - maybe the other half could have taken it on her next trip to Harrods! Having read the piece from Wikipedia, I wonder how much Apple got from NVIDIA in the settlement?

also the SUPER drive is just clicking and noisy

I haven't had any problems so far with the optical drive in my MBP. But the one in the 17" iMacCore Duo died right after the 1 year mark. Those Matshita drives are very poorly designed or manufactured.

Reporting another logic board failure, mid 2010 15" Mbp ran hot a bit, battery died, now won't boot. 3 genius bar trips, not resolved, needs logic board, out of warranty ah well, expensive paper weight, my last Mac. They should stand behind their expensive products.  My new bumper sticker reads, Back to PC for me.

I also have a MBP whose main board has problems (system will hang after around 40 minutes of use). I've seen videos, over the internet, of guys who put their main board into an oven and heat the board. Then it seems to work for them. Before asking Apple for seeing the problem and charging for a new board, I'm thinking it's smarter to try the oven technique as well (it can't be worse), despite all these little cables to remove and connect back…

Thanks. I don't know “when” I'll do that. I've already removed that logic board once (and exchanged it with the one of another Mac), and it's some kind of a pain to do that (the first time, at least).

If you're in the USA, most have reported (including me) that Apple will replace main logic boards, and repair other hardware problems discovered at the same time, for a $310 flat rate.

If you go baking components at 200-300 ºF, that will surely qualify as "abuse" -- might not get the $310 rate.  USA  List price on the logic board alone, is around $700-800.

Thanks for the advice, but I live in Europe. Even if the same applies here, it makes sense trying (I've seen one vendor selling this card for cheap, my MBP being a 2008 one).

My MBP I bought in June 2007 also just bit the dust due to the logic board.  I was quoted $310 to fix it and any other issues, so I sent it in.

They just called me yesterday to say that during their tests, they discovered an "unqualified" superdrive that didn't pass all their tests.  Therefore they needed to re-quote me at... wait for it... $1240!

Basically, the original crappy superdrive had failed 2 years ago, and rather than have Apple fix it for a riduculous sum of money (I forget how much), I opted to buy one and replace it myself (which, btw, is working just fine).  Now just because I had to fix their broken DVD drive before, the cost to replace the logic board goes up by $900+?  What a joke.

I would challenge that.   When my 2008 MBP was sent in for Logic Board replacement a couple weeks ago, Apple replaced the Superdrive, LED Drive board, and both fans, all for the $310 flat rate.

Granted it's not "their" qualified superdrive, but that's insane that they would jack up the price for an unrelated logic board failure.

BTW, my MBP had a non-OEM hard drive -- couple years ago I replaced the optional Apple 200Gb drive with a new 500GB 7200 rpm drive.   Apple didn't object.

This is the significant disadvantage with "closed" hardware and software, like Apple's.   Apple's position is probably that a notebook is a tightly integrated piece of hardware -- true -- but I doubt most Wintel PC manufacturer would give a rat's patootie.
