Hi everyone, I could really do with some advice.
I have a late-2007 Macbook Pro that in December 2012 decided to die on me. It's showing all the symptoms of the Nvidia failure (black screen, blinking sleep light, whurring from inside). I took it to an Apple Genius and after a few short tests he said it'd be the logic board that failed and quoted over £400 to be sent off to be fixed. After returning home and extensive research about this on the net, decided to complain to Apple Online (whom I bought the laptop from), and all the told me was that they couldn't help online and to phone customer service. I then complained to the "T cook" email address, mentioning the Sales of Goods Act 1979 (UK) and promptly receieved a reply email and call from someone wanting to discuss this problem with me. They were very helpful and arranged a free Nvidia failure test at a local authorised Apple dealer. I took my machine for the test, and today received a phone call from Apple telling me they're afraid it's not a problem with the Nvidia chip, that it's a logic board problem, probably due to it's age (5 years old). They didn't quote me a repair cost but told me when I buy a new machine from them, they may be able to offer a "small discount", great.
After returning home from work I have researched this a little further and discovered this is a common problem, and that the logic boards fail due to the Nvidia chip over heating. And in this case Apple claim it's a logic board failure rather then Nvidia chip failure. (Correct me if I'm wrong). My laptop always had a problem with overheating, and the underneath used to get red hot when it had been running for a while. I assumed this to be normal, however thinking back, I'm pretty sure it isn't. In 2011 I had to replace my battery, due to the other expanding out of the machine and no longer fitting... (surely a sign that the machine was getting far too hot).
I could really do with some advice whether to continue to take this matter further, or whether I am flogging a dead horse. I'm not one to complain, and would much rather just accept my machine is doomed for failure, however if it is worth taking it further, then I will.
A few questions I have are:
*How can the Nvidia test work if the machine wont even boot, after reading somewhere it's a software test. Plus I was asked by the Apple Authorised re-seller shop to give them my password, which I found strange at the time so didn't give it them.
*Apparently the test wont run if the logic board has failed. But isn't it likely the logic board failed due to the Nvidia chip being faulty and overheating? Do I dispute this with them?
*Is it worth when I pick my laptop up to dispute the case with them, and ask for a copy of the test diagnostic report?
Thanks if anyone can help! Really at a loss with this now.
