Q: MacBook Pro Logic Board Failure

I was using my computer just fine (2007 MBP core 2 duo) all day. Put it to sleep came back after 30 minutes and tried to wake it and it's dead. I held down the power key to shut it down then tried to restart no luck. No start up chime, no screen, keyboard seems dead as well (caps lock light does not light up), HD does not start up. The only signs of life are the white light on the screen latch that is now on, the fans are spinning and the DVD drive seems to work.

Reset the power management module and zapped the PRAM, no luck.

Early 2011 MBP has had logicboard symptoms for nearly its entire lifespan.  Now the computer is completely unusable.  I have an appointment tomorrow to see if they will honor the statement that they will fix it for free within 3 years of purchase....

Where did you see the statement? I have not heard of it before now.

That seems to be clear, Mid 2010 15" models of MBP will be covered in the case of intermittent freezes and loss of video, for 3 years,

    Thanks

Some Users have reported that the individual Genius was reluctant to vary from the stated policy after a TS4088 VST "FAILED" result, where too much time had passed.

Others reported that the Store Manager was occasionally helpful in allowing the repair anyway in some cases.

I would add that it is important to remain polite and businesslike as you make your case with them. Apple wants you to be a happy customer. Those who shout and threaten to sue eveyone will never be happy customers, so they may get no special treatment.

Yes, that's always good advice, be polite.

    ...

So I picked up my notebook from the apple store service. The lady said that they ran the tests, and it showed that the logic board failed. When I asked what exactly the problem is with it or which part of it is damaged, she couldn't tell me. She said it was not specified in the tests. And there was no printout or log , because of the nature of the test. When I asked about the gpu, she said the same, that the test didn't specify anything. She finally told me that the message they got after the test was this :

    ASD had 21 errors

    2 SMC - rest video

What do you guys think? Is it a GPU issue?

And what's even more weird, I brought home my MacBook and turned it on to see if its still the same ...... And it actually booted up to the desktop. But it seemed very very slow. But then next time it went to sleep like before... I don't know what to think now.

    Any ideas?

Hi MBP users or former MPB users,

Same story as everyone, my 1 and 1/2 year old MPB 15" just died 2 days ago.

Naively relying on buying a great Apple quality computer at high price, I didn't think at that time that it would be necessary to purchase the Apple Care. Today I have huge regrets, huge disappointment and lot of anger!

The diagnostic is the same as everyone else, the logicboard crashed.

It has been 3 days now that I am trying to get an explanation from Apple customer service about how a 1.5 year old computer can just crashed like this and to get them to pay for the repair.

In vain, of course, like I could read on this thread, they know perfectly about it and they do nothing.

They just hide behind the fact that we did not sign for the Apple Care.

The bill to pay to get back my computer is huge, 4,500HK$ (more than 550US$). And they even have the guts to tell me that they are not even sure if the repair would work for long and that they advise to buy a new computer instead.

This is discusting and so unfair! I have already paid more than 1,900US$ for this computer a year and a half ago!

As we are more powerful as a group, I was wondering if anyone else also based in Hong Kong and having the same issue, would agree to meet and discuss what could be done. I could also join any legal action already in process or help forwarding our story through Social Networks. I have checked with the Community Legal Information Centre and apparently in a case like mine and according to Hong Kong Sales of Goods ordinance Section 16, Apple had breached this Ordinance as they sold me a product that is "not of satisfactory quality". Anyone willing to take action with me, please let me know.

    Biouche-

If you have the MacBook Pro 6,2 15" model , there is a recall in effect.

Print out a copy of the article cited below (as a hedge against "they never heard of this program") and take it to your Apple dealer:

TS4088- MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video

Ask them to run the Video System Test specifically for this problem. (This is important because the standard "overnight bake" will NOT find this problem.) Do not leave until they have run this test which ends in a spectacular PASSED or FAILED display.

If FAILED, you MAY be allowed the repair under the recall. You MUST be polite and businesslike. Apple wants you to be a happy customer. Any threat to sue everybody identifies you as a person who will NEVER be a happy customer, so you will get no special treatment.

I have an Early 2011 MBP (bought in July 2011), it is in for repair at the moment for another logic board replacement.

+ October  2012- I opened up the bottom of the MBP to clean out any accumulated dust and upgrade my RAM (8 GB). I noticed that a screw was missing over the airport card. I contacted AppleCare and they referred me to the retail Genius Bar. I also took pictures for AppleCare and they said it was no problem, just go to the store and they will replace it. I went to the store, and in less than 10 minutes they out in a new screw for free.

+ November 2012 - My MBP decided it would not sleep on its own. Ever. I tried reinstalling OS X, but no dice. I contacted AppleCare and they made me an appointment at the Genius Bar. Two days later, the MacBook Pro was back in my hands with a new logic board and the problem was solved. Apple also replaced the top case during the repair (no idea why, I was not aware of any issues with the top case).

+ June 2013 - The discrete GPU appears to have failed. Whenever I use VMWare or anything that is GPU-intensive, the display gets pixelated, and turns to either an all black or blue screen. I am currently waiting for the repair to be completed by the Apple Store.

I'm not angry but I have some concerns about the overall quality. Thankfully I have AppleCare on the MacBook Pro so I am covered for another year but I am hoping to keep this machine for another few years.

"Early 2011 MBP has had logicboard symptoms for nearly its entire lifespan."

You've waited three years to care care of this?  Were you expecting a personal invitation to take it in for service?

Exactly the same thing happened with me . Just in an year;s time after purchase , so you are still lucky and their customer service is pathetic...even i dont know now what to do with the machine . To make the matters worse, one store gives one diagnostic the othe gives diffrent and cost estimates are diffrent as well ...dont know what to trust and why .

Carl if purchases during 2011 (early ) had a logic board issue, why should Apple not recall or fix the problem free of cost ???
