Interface Sound Effects wont shut off

For some strange reason my iMac won't stop buzzing, beeping and making every weird interface sound effect under the sun.

It happens when I mouse click, tab, open or close anything on my desktop and I can't get them to turn off.

I've researched enough to know to go to System Pref< Sound Effects< and uncheck Play user interface sound effects and bring Alert Volume to mute.
This I did, but to no avail, the sound effects refuse to be hushed.
Please help, my computer used to be so nice & quiet.

IMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

I suspect you accidentally checked one of the hearing preferences in Universal Access. Navigate to System Preferences-Universal Access and look under the hearing tab.

You can also try doing both SMC and PRAM resets. The instructions for those are:

_SMC RESET_

• Shut down the computer.
• Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
• Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
• Release the power button.
• Attach the computers power cable.
• Press the power button to turn on the computer.

_PRAM RESET_

• Shut down the computer.
• Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
• Turn on the computer.
• Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
• Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
• Release the keys.
