Question: Self-assigned IP address with Apple USB Ethernet Adapter

Hello,

I recently bought MacBook Air 13'' (Late 2010) and Apple USB Ethernet Adapter but wasn't able to get ethernet network working. I have tried two different routers but it always shows "USB Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet". Device is recognized, cable is connected (status: connected) but IP is not assigned (even thou it is set to automatic DHCP). Tried renewing IP but no luck - the same issue. Needles to say that ethernet works fine with Windows PC.

The same router perfectly assigns IP if connecting via WiFi.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ugis

Hi,

So I still get the trouble with adapter. I applied all latest updates; tried connecting adaptor on both USB ports, followed recommendations from post http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2624518&tstart=0; tried using manual IP settings. But still issue is not gone.

I have no more ideas as to go to apple service.

Hola,

Network location trick solved the problem (or at least i think it did). Also I did spend some time figuring why I still can't get IP from my router and just somehow missed the fact that I have to add net adapter mac address to list as my router was set up to use mac filter. Pretty huge user error 🙂

Thanks.

I had this on my brand new MBA11.
Finally, this helped:
Turn Off Airport
Open Network Preferences
Remove Airport Service
Advanced, delete all known wireless networks
In Keychain Access, delete all known networks
In Library/Preferences/ delete all airport related plist & system preferences.
Restart OSx
Open Network Preferences, add Airport service
Start AirPort
Add desired wireless networks...

DONE!???

Re: ethernet to USB
Same Problem, Called Apple; They had me turn everything off including my Cox Modem. Turned Modem on then computer (MBP15). Now it works fine. Tried it on the Mac Air I just got... works fine there too.

I need to try the adapter on another network next.
