Airport express does not find printer

I have connected my Airport Express to a Brother X5690 printer via the USB port. I followed steps to add the printer via the Printer System Preferences pane but it cannot find any printer. Any ideas how I can diagnose this?

For further information, the Airport Express is detected by my MacBook Pro (core duo pre-unibody) with the Airport Utility app, and it has not problem seeing my wi-fi network. I am using OS X 10.6.5.

Thank you for your response. I have restarted my wifi network - no effect. Followed steps per the Apple Support Doc link including switching off/on printer and Airport Express - no effect; reset Printer Systems settings - no effect; and lastly manually configure the Airport Express - still unable to see printer.

At the bottom it says if there is still an issue to contact the printer manufacturer, however I am confused why it is the printer's issue when connecting the printer directly to the computer is not a problem. Sounds like passing the buck to me.

There's a significant difference between a printer that is directly attached to a computer and a printer that functions over a network. Separate printer drivers are required for each application.

It is the printer manufacturer that supplies the drivers for their devices to Apple. While most manufacturers have provided drivers that work when a printer is attached directly to a computer, some have not provided drivers for all of their devices to function on a +network connection+.

Since it appears that Brother has not provided the network drivers to Apple for your particular model, you might want to check with Brother to see if the network driver might be available directly from them as a download that you could install to gain the functionality that you need.

The only workaround available to you at this point would be a situation where you have the Lexmark connected to another computer. If you then enable "Printer Sharing" over your network, your laptop would be able to print to the Lexmark over the wireless network.

If it's not too late to return the Lexmark, take a look at the printers offered by the Apple Store as they will function correctly as network printers at the USB port.

Or, look at a printer that will connect using wireless only...not USB. That would also allow you to do what you want.

Hi Yaptastic,

Your Lexmark X5690 supports wireless printing through Airport Express.

Try to reinstall the printer using the latest printer driver from the Lexmark website. Download the driver using this link [Lexmark X5690 Driver for Mac OS X 10.6.5|http://bit.ly/i7JJpM].

After reinstalling the printer driver, go to *System Preferences*:
- Go to *Universal Access* -> place a check mark for *Enable access for assistive devices*.
- Go to Sharing -> place a check mark for *Printer Sharing*.
- Go to Security -> Firewall -> disable firewall.

To add your Lexmark printer on your Mac OS X 10.6.5 through Airport Express, please refer to this article [Support for Apple Wi-Fi Base Station USB Printing|http://bit.ly/hKe4XA]. Note: After Step 4 when you click on " +" button, make sure the " Default" icon is highlighted; *5600 Series* should appear under *Printer Name*, then proceed to the next steps.

I hope this information has been helpful.

Hello LexmarkListens,

Thank you for your message. It gave me hope, however, I followed your instructions but am still not able to view the printer in the "Print & Fax" pane.
From the below, the only option I had to change was checking the "Printer Sharing" option in the Sharing pane. I also have the latest drive (1.1.0).

I have not found any definitive list of supported printers (according to Apple I must contact the manufacturer). According to Lexmark help support (live text), I was told the printer was not supported.
