I just hooked up a brand new iMac desktop for a friend. I downloaded Skype without a problem, but cannot get the camera to work. The camera works in Photo Booth, but not in Skype. There is audio, but no video. I had this problem before, but cannot remember the fix. Can anyone help me? Is there a Skype expert among us?
Thanks in advance!
Dave
Consider any of these you have not already tried.
(0) Your posted info shows you are using
Mac OS X (10.6.2)
Unless you have compelling reasons for using outdated Mac OS software,
• Backup your Mac and turn off Time Machine
• Disconnect peripherals and restart Mac
• Use Disk Utility to repair permissions
• Download and install
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1349
• Repair permissions again immediately following the restart that finishes the update.
• Test Skype and other apps to be sure things are working well.
Depending on how you use your Mac, this may take a week or more.
(• Turn Time Machine on again when you are satisfied that the update worked.)
(1) If your OS is current, restart Mac, use your Mac's Disk Utility to repair permissions, and test again.
(2) If the problem remains, double check that there is no other app, startup item, or widget that can use iSight running while you are trying to Skype. iSight can be used by one application at a time:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2411
(3) If the problem persists, try these ideas from this Skype Help page:
http://tinyurl.com/4ta7zj9
Make sure that the correct video device (webcam) is selected in Skype, under
Skype > Preferences > Video and also, in the same preference pane the checkbox ”
Enable Skype video” , is checked. You can also reset your custom settings by deleting the file com.skype.skype.plist located in User/Library/Preferences, re-launching skype will then search for the available video devices.
Finally, check that you have closed all other applications that might be using the webcam.
These include: Video editing software, instant messengers (e.g. iChat), browsers (e.g. Safari or Firefox). Simply restarting both Skype and Mac may also help.
Note: *Quit Skype before throwing the com.skype.skype.plist file*.
Note: *Do NOT do anything about drivers*. Everything you need is in Snow Leopard.
