Macbook won't go 1920x1080 on external display

Hello everybody!

I recently purchased a Macbook (new, current model) and I've been trying to connect it to a Samsung SyncMaster P2270 display. I bought the DVI-to-MiniDisplayPort connector from Apple for that. It works fine, both in mirrored and extended screen mode, but the maximum resolution I can choose is 1600x1200 which looks distorted, and therefore I'm stuck to 1600x900. I know that my screen supports 1920x1080, and I've been using it on that resolution with my old laptop.

I've also tried the tool "SwitchresX", but still not working.

Any clues on how to get 1920x1080? Is it possible that a VGA-to-MiniDisplayPort can perform better than the one I have?

Any suggestion will be very welcome. Thank you!

Welcome to the forums. Have you downloaded the latest drivers for your external display? I have found with Samsung monitors it is best to have the correct drivers installed to get the best resolution.

I am having similar problems connecting to a new Vizio (26''). It won't recognize my computer through VGA on any resolution settings at all. The manual says it is best at 1960x1080 with 60hz, but that setting doesn't show up in my Macbook's system preferences. The Macbook will power that, right? What do I do to get it to work?

Thank you First Magus for your answer. I checked about the drivers, but couldn't find anything for mac on the samsung website.

Nevertheless, I bought a miniDisplayPort-to-VGA adapter and... voilá! I could finally choose the optimum resolution. I have it working correctly since yesterday.

I have no idea why the VGA connection works better than the DVI, but I've seen across many forums that plenty of users are having the same issue as I was having. Maybe the VGA adapter could help them as well.

Runninrick: maybe you could try the other way. Get the DVI-to-minidisplay adapter. I could return my first adapter back on the apple store, just because I explained that it was not working.
