iPhone Shuts Off when Fully Charged, Reports Low Battery

I have an iPhone 3GS with the latest OS. Starting in September, the phone has started shutting down despite having plenty of battery life. When I try to restart it, it shows a dead battery logo and shuts back off. I have to plug it in and leave it alone for a few minutes until it starts back up. Once it starts back up, the battery shows plenty of charge. At first, it happened when the battery got down to 40-30%. Now it's happening with as much as 90% battery life.

It seems to happen mainly when I'm transferring data via 3G. Emailing, web browsing, etc. But once it shuts off, I have to plug it back in to make it work. No, the phone is not Jailbroken.

Last night I did a full restore, hoping that would solve the problem, but no luck. This is getting to be very frustrating. Any ideas?

Thank you,

Scott

No, I added back all my apps, music and video from backup after doing the restore. The phone is near useless without all the things I want on it.

The battery isn't going dead. Once I plug it in again, the battery still has a charge and will continue working for the rest of the day most of the time. When it does shut down, it will either shut down quickly again or not start up at all unless I plug it in for 5 minutes. After that, its often fine. But the randomness of it is very annoying, especially if I'm away from a plug.

I'll give that a try. I came back here to read any updates because my phone just quit on me again, with 98% battery and having only just recently been unplugged. So it SHOULD have plenty of power. Again, it was while transferring data over 3G. One other detail -- I think this happens only when the signal is very week. My office is built out of lead, so I'm lucky to have one bar. And this is where it always quits.

Still shutting down randomly. It seems like it happens whenever the phone has to "work" hard at something. Usually downloading data whent he signal is weak. But also when playing a video, or attempting to record one. I was trying to video my mother-in-law getting in a bounce-house at a birthday party -- a very unusual event -- and it shut off as soon as I hit record. Needless to say, I was highly annoyed.

When I shuts off, it takes a while to start back up again. Sometimes it will stay on, for as bit, but sometimes it will shut off immediately again. Start up, shut off again. Then on the third or fourth time, it will show the dead battery image. At that point you have to plug it in to get it to start up. After this, it'll work "fine" and show the battery is actually not dead. Until it decides to start quitting again. When I'm away from the house for a while, having your phone just stop working completely is VERY frustrating.

Is there any way to get some input from Apple without paying for it? I have to keep this phone until September when my contract is up. Then I can get a new phone. But for now, this is what I have and it's not working out for me.

It sounds like a failure of the charging circuit or the battery itself. If you're under warranty, Apple will probably repalce it. If not, you'll have to deal with it, attempt to get it repaired or buy a new phone.

There are many places that repair iPhones, Google for one in your area.

You can get a 3GS for $49... http://www.bgr.com/2011/01/11/iphone-3gs-now-49-from-apple-too/
