Only "Headphones" sound, no speaker sound after 4.2.1 upgrading

After I had finished upgrading 4.2.1 firmware for my iPad, the speaker's sound has gone.
I can hear the sound from my iPad only when I connected to any headphones or bluetooth devices.
I tried many methods to get the sound back, starting from:

1. trying to plug in and out my headphone - nothing changed
2. switch on and off from the mute button (former is lock button) but it only showed "Headphones" or "Mute" sign.
3. shut down and turn on my iPad - nothing changed
4. Hard Reset my iPad and Restore - Still no sound, but I had to re-install everything again
5. Ask everyone and search every "no sound from iPad" topics but found none like mine.

However, while I upgraded the firmware, I noticed that I "locked" the screen during the process and I heard someone in the internet told me that it might be the origin of my problem.
I tried to sync my iPad and find how to re-upgrading the firmware again with no "locked" the button but there is no way to.

Well, you sound as though you've done just about all that you can on your own. I have just one possible explanation and solution.

For some strange reason, you've suffered a hardware fault in your mini-jack which results in aa continual 'plugged in' state, meaning the speakers are killed. The solution is more difficult, depending on what you feel like trying.

I might try a healthy squirt of CRC down into the mini-jack's opening, followed by running an actual plug in and out of it for a while; if a mechanical fix is possible, or if it's a corrosion issue, that might fix it up.

Or, just take it on in to a Genius Bar, let them play with it, and walk our the door with a new one

My iPad sound was suddenly available on headphones only. After trying everything for two hours, a friend of mine stumbled upon the solution. Open the YouTube channel and in the right up corner there is a microphone function. Tap on it and it will ask you to speak what you are looking for. Say something and after it finds it, your sound will be on on speaker as it should be. Good luck and if it helps, drop a line.

Same problem with sound. Family members also having same issue. Hardware explanation seems unlikely since find my phone tones are loud and clear from speakers. Convinced it is software and not happy hat apple seems to be ignoring the issue. Sister has Ben to genius bar and the proposed solution was to update to 3 to get support since iPad no longer supported.

I Have the exact same issue as Waltz-woods. It isn't my mute side button I've tried that obviously and like Waltz I have sounds such as alarm, and ring tones so I know it isnt the jack eroding. I has this same issue with my iPhone the last upgrade and took it to the Genius Bar and they forced me to buy a new iPhone; they weren't helpful at all.

WAltz keep us in the loop. Hopefully this isn't Apples way of trying to force us to buy the latest ipad but it wouldnt surprise me.

There are multiple ways to solve this problem, and there could be a handful of causes.

The most common cause is; your device had some water damage. There is a chance that the water went into the place where you plug in headphones. If so, take a q-tip and remove as much cotton as possible. Once the end of the q-tip is small, you can stick it into the place where you plug in the headphones.

If there is no water damage, try this:

1. Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

2. Reset all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings. No data will be lost but you will have to enter all of the device settings again.

3. If you lost sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds may have been muted.

System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.

Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.

If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.

If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.

If your device still doesn't have sound, I suggest taking it to the Apple store to get it fixed.

I had similar problem with my Iphone 3, sound worked when phone is ringing, but in ipod, safari or youtube didn't, and when adjusting volume, it clearly showed text "headset" meaning that device "thinks" that earphones are plugged in. Problem have solved itself, when the phone have dried out (I've forgotten than a small amount of milk was on the screen in some moment and although I've cleaned it immediately, probably some part of it has entered inside)

Ok, I have the same issue on my MacBook. I found a solution!

there is a sensor in the headphone jack that tells the computer to turn the speakers off when there is headphones plugged in, and sometimes that sensor gets jammed and the computer thinks there is headphones plugged in when there isn't.

Solution: Get a tooth pick or something and stick it in there to un-jam the sensor (notice a red light!). Solved my problem!
