I have just spent two days dealing with this nonsense. I bought my wife the iPod Nano for Christmas. Had to upgrade to iTunes 10.1 only to find it doesn't work on a OS X 10.4.10 operating system.

Spent all day today on the phone dealing with Apple only to learn they want $129 to upgrade to Leopard. No guarantee it will work.

Programmed obsolescence. Disgraceful.

I returned the Nano. Can't be a good business model.

What kind of Red Herring is it to toss a remark in about Apple's business model being highly successful when we are all struggling to solve a real problem created by Apple's Business model.

I received my Touch as a gift. Should I shake my finger at the kind person who bought me that item knowing that I have iTunes installed? Should they have called me and asked what versions I was running? C'mon.

The question still remains, what can I do to upgrade enough to connect the G4 Touch without having to junk a perfectly operating PPC G5 iMac?

I feel betrayed by this "look for the tiny print" caveat.

The question has been answered, several times now: upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5 which your iMac G5 will run quite nicely (in fact it may run better).

If you are unable or unwilling to do that, return the gift and tell the giver "thanks, but your gift isn't compatible with my computer". Or sell the iPod and buy something that will work for you.

Regards.

While sympathizing with your situation, you have to accept that if you hang on to older equipment - in the computer world or elsewhere - you are limited by what that equipment can do. If you have a ten-year-old television it won't receive high definition broadcasts no matter what you do: it just doesn't have the facilities to do that.

Similarly the iPod Touch requires facilities in an operating system which 10.4.11 - having been created long before the Touch - does not include: it's not a marketing decision to screw money out of you, it's quite simply that 10.4.11 and the iPod cannot work together. At least you can upgrade to Leopard: if you had a G4 Tiger machine you wouldn't even have that option.

Those of us with (suddenly) severely limited expansion resources would like to milk a few extra years out of what was some pretty bulletproof hardware.

Indeed. So when we decided to buy a mp3 player we went with a Sansa Clip and not an iPod. Even there we have to deal with hardware incompatibilities; like 90% of what's out there they only make it with Windows users in mind. Nevertheless you can still copy files to and from it (there's even an iTunes script on their support forum, and their support department emailed me instructions on making playlists) and with a bit of computer know-how that behooves anybody with 8 year old equipment, it is possible to make it work.

With thanks to Roger Wilmut1 and Dave Sawyer, I'm glad for the suggestions and reassurances.

Tech specs for the iPod nano, clearly stated on Apple's web page and, I believe, right on the nano's packaging:

"Mac computer with USB 2.0 port, Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later, and iTunes 10 or later"

If you didn't see that, it's not Apple's fault and is certainly not a "scam".

And for you, the problem is easily solved with the upgrade to Snow Leopard which can be had for under $30.00 US.
